Looks like elevations over 4,000' along the NC-TN-VA segments are looking at a sloppy day today. Check ahead for local conditions.

Yuk, but better than a good day at work!
My grand kids got out of school early in Boone. They may still be in school in July. Grinning.

Was at Standing Indian Shelter last night. Woke up to a tent encased in ice and howling winds. Higher elevations looked worse. Forced to backtrack 0.9 miles back to Deep Gap where I was lucky to get a cab to pick me up. Definite hypothermia weather. I hope everyone is OK out there. Stay safe.

This is from Crestwood Resort, along Shulls Mill Rd between Blowing Rock and Foscoe. Elevation about 3,600'. Live at 4:00pm 4/4/13.

I encountered such conditions on my last March trip---March 21 to be exact. The wind was brutal as was the cold. No point in bailing though, as I see it. Just keep moving up the trail or hunker in and wait it out.

I had to get out of the cold gap at 4,400 feet or at least I got out of the wind to birth an urgent turtlehead and dreaded topping the ridge and getting hit with the 0F wind. Wind changes everything.

That's just a snippet. I wrote two books on the elusive turtlehead and the in-the-woods birthing processes for the newb and expert alike. For example, sometimes a midwife is required, etc.
