More like a 26 pound pack.
More like a 26 pound pack.
Unless you are Andrew Skurka, slack packing with a HUGE amount of off trail support, that small pack weight, at least for me, with just the barest of essentials, and only a few luxury items, is totally unobtainable. With my pack and a full weeks worth of groceries, I top out at around 30 - 35 pounds. This year, I'll be carrying a few extra pounds of electronics because I am totally online with BOA and Bill Pay, and since I can't prepay my mortgage, I have no other option. I'm guessing there are more than a few folks out there who "think" their pack weighs a lot less. IMHO. :-?

My pack generally weighed less than 20 lbs including food and water leaving town including some electronics (camera, cell phone, MP3 player)

Cool, I might run into her eventually. My pack is almost exactly 16 pounds base as well (15lb-8oz) , FULLY equipped, full rain/cold gear, conventional tent (2#-5oz), 20 degree sleeping bag, stove, emergency stuff, camera, smart phone and 3 extra batteries & charger. I head out tomorrow w/ 4 days food/fuel, will be right at 25 pounds grand total. Really not hard to get to this very modest weight, even if you're not Andrew Skurka.

The article is a little confusing about that, listing 24 and 33 as well. Those are with different food and water loads. About midway through, there is a section that says her base weight is 16 pounds and gives a few details.
My AT base weight with the same sleeping bag rating was just below 10 pounds. Hers is very achievable with some experience, mainly at what not to bring.
