.................................................. .................................................. ....

i just ran into Bob Peoples at The Place and he gave me this flyer and told me that now The Park Service figures this guy to be between Damascus and Dennis Cove Road or in the general area.

I have attempted to retrieve a photo but cannot seem to find any more information on the web other than what Bob told me and the flyer he left at The Place.

I'm hiking south tomorrow....

Thanks Wanderer. I am packing for a 3 day hike from Carvers Gap to Erwin with my 15 y.o. daughter starting Sunday. Just called the Sheriff in Unicoi County, and he recommended we change our plans. Drat! I'm gonna take him up on the advise - unless they catch this guy between now & then. If it was just me, I'd probably hike. But I'm not taking any chances with my daughter.

Now we have to find another place to hike. Hmmmm

We are really hoping that this manhunt is concluded ASAP. The hunt is being concentrated on the trail because, well the trail is the easiest access. This Tipton man is from this area and knows the mountians as a hunter. He could be any where and it is doubtfull that he is actually ON THE AT! Never the less, it is really causing some trouble for the hikers that are in the area. During the past two days there have been several people escorted off the trail, rifle carrying swat type officers entering shelters in the night and asking people to clear out. The ATC Biennial has dozens of hikes planned in this area over the coming week and it could affect hundreds of hikers. The officials are taking this serious and should get him soon!

Home doesn't feel the same with this guy loose. Our home is suddenly too close to the trail. 2 nights ago there was a guy in a pick-up down at the trailhead when we got home. I walked down to see what he was doing a few minutes later but he was gone. A day or so later I find out they had a road block less than 20miles away. I'm sitting here looking at his picture and am starting to think I should call the sherriff, borrow a gun, etc.

This is why every american should own and keep a loaded gun, it is the ultimate equalizer. If you are worried about kids, then teach them how to handle a gun properly and what it can do, some discipline and respect. The only kids I ever hear about shooting someone is the one that is curious, not the one's that have been taught to respect them.

Exactly where do the cops expect hikers to go in the middle of the night, that were sleeping in a shelter.

Horsecrappy TOWanderer? Why assume panic? Maybe am not a hiker, which would make me bulletproof? This guy was at my house a few nights ago. I consider it a serious situation but thanks for your smug reply.

As of this morning the authorities do not know what are Tipton is in... if he is even near the AT. Officially they are still warning hikers to be aware of others they meet when in the woods and report any really unusual things to the authorities. The problem is that A LOT of people are calling in tips and they all have to be checked out. Hikers with cell phones are a new phenom for authorities to deal with and has it's own set of problems.

They are not saying that the AT is closed... just to be careful. More than anything they are concerned that he may want your food. Groups are suggested.

The hunt for him seems to be a little more crazy because we have several other ... ummm .... more traditional type hikers and trail camping people out in this area right now. These guys are kind of living on the trail in this area and are so out of the general long distance hiker mold that they are being reported and then have to be checked out...

I just wish they would find him on a train to somewhere and get this over with!

The hikers that were being removed from shelters the other night were being escorted to waiting USFS vehicles and driven into towns. They were reported as being very nice and helpful... just scary to see guys with guns all of a sudden appear!

Shenandoah National Park (VA)
Follow-up on Search for Homicide Suspect

The search for the man suspected of killing two people in a town outside of the park came to a conclusion around 5 a.m. yesterday on a road just outside of the park, when the man, found and confronted by state and county officers, committed suicide. The NPS was involved extensively in the search for the man. More than 20 rangers from Shenandoah and Blue Ridge were involved in the operation, including a tactical tracking team from the latter. Segments of the Appalachian Trail and Skyline Drive that were closed during the search have been reopened.

Thanks T O Wanderer. Stay safe out there. He was wearing a red\white ballcap with white lettering and teardrop sunglasses when I saw him. He was in a light colored pick-up with primer on it. Stop by if you're coming this far. Peace

If this guy is still in the area, there are enough hikers on the trail right now that he should have been spotted by now. The ATC is sponsoring hikes every day in this area. Also, please keep in mind not every single white male that people se on the trail is a crazed maniac. Plese don't be calling the authorities about every person you see on the trail. They have better things to do. Hang up the phone and hike on if you dont feel comfortable.

Has anyone heard an update on Darrell Tipton in the past week? Is he still suspected to be around the AT in the NC/TN area?

My friend says they were searching around Spillcorn n.c. last week. Looks to be another Eric Rudolf case.
