View Full Version : 'Rhododendrons hike' suggestion : We got June 8 to June 14 open.

We got June 8 to June 14 open for a backpacking trip. One of the ideas is to hike the AT during the rhododendron bloom. I am assuming going from Damascus NOBO, or SOBO to Damascus is the idea ? As a family we can do 15 mile days.
I'd be interested hearing tips on best approach as well as accessibility from nearby airports (i.e.how to get there and how to get out of there)

I'll let someone else address the how-to-get-there question. I just wanted to point out that Roan Mtn (further south of the area you described) has a big rhododendron festival June 15-16. Roan Mtn is the place to be to see rhododendron in bloom. Of course, they will be blooming elsewhere on the trail also, but I'd go there!

Trying to figure out where to fly to. Portland maine to knoxville and then car rental?

I would do Erwin TN to Kincora Hostel , "Definitely ROAN MT":jump.

I was gonna say Roan Mt too. It's incredible.
I would call Bob Peoples at kincora Hostel to see if he could pick you up at the nearest airport if so i would go SOBO from Kincora if no then NOBO from Erwin.
