Shenandoah National Park Fire Managers began a prescribed burn of 500 acres in the park’s south district today. The burn area is located west of Jarman Gap and northeast of Waynesboro, Virginia. Smoke from the burn will be visible from both inside and outside the park. During the burn, the Gasline Road Trail will be closed to the public.

The park just announced on their Facebook page, "Had to close southern portion of Skyline Drive. If you're coming from the south, enter at Rt.33." Shenandoah National Park's Facebook page has a map of the planned burn area.

This was just posted on Shenandoah National Park's Facebook page:

We are continuing with the prescribed burn operations today. At this point, the South District is closed because of smoke and equipment staging. We hope to open all but the burn area (mile 95 to 97) as soon as we can.

From Shenandoah National Park:

The Appalachian Trail is closed between Turk Gap and Jarman Gap. AT hikers are being re-routed to the Skyline Drive in that area.

The following update comes from A.T. Chief Ranger Todd Remaley and the Shenandoah National Park website:

The 500-acre Jarman Gap prescribed burn in the south section of Shenandoah National Park was successfully completed on Thursday. The section of the A.T. previously closed to travel as a precaution prescribed fire opened at 2:00 pm. today. No damage was sustained to the trail; fire did burn near the trail’s edge for a short distance south of Sawmill Run Overlook. Local residents and visitors will continue to see smoke from within the burn area over the next several days. Fire monitoring and rehab activities will continue in the area. More information can be found at www.nps.gov/shen/parknews/jarman-gap-prescribed-burn-completed.htm (http://www.nps.gov/shen/parknews/jarman-gap-prescribed-burn-completed.htm).
