Hiked the Mt Tecumseh Trail today and got into a mixed bag of sleet and heavy snow above 3000 feet

You're killing me. It is 85+ in Houston. Summer is here until Thanksgiving, maybe Christmas.
Put a sticky on this thread for all of the early SoBo gear questions.
Enjoy!

I've seen more snow than that up there ... unforecast, in June.

Not much snow in the valleys right now in Vermont, but it's still being measured in feet in the mountains... and it snowed more today. This is more like it!

I have it on record that yesterday there was great skiing to be had on Wildcat.

There has been hopes of the Tuckerman's glacier forming at some point but inevitably, its does melt out for a few weeks in August. If you want year round snow (actually ice) a visit to Icy Gulch in Randolph or Mahoosuc Ravine usually turns up.

Yep, still winter-like. I was on the Kinsmans today, here are few photos of what is up there on the AT. The first one is of the sign at the junction of the Kinsman Ridge Trail (AT) and Mt. Kinsman Trail, fairly close to Kinsman Jct. and the turn for the Kinsman Pond Shelter. Signs usually are not posted shin-high!

The second is of a post-hole I found just north of the South Kinsman summit before the trail goes back into the trees for the trip over to North Kinsman, on the AT. It is pretty deep and would be about thigh deep or deeper on me, although I didn't step in it to find out! Snow pack is still deep at the higher altitudes.

Very windy today, but the footing wasn't too bad - the snowshoes got a free 10+ mile ride.

Crazy, this time last year I hiked everything on the AT from Hanover to Gorham with microspikes (basically late March and all of April). There were many days spent in a t-shirt and shorts as well. I certainly got lucky last year!

You missed out, I was up there from the Kanc yesterday via Champney falls. Great hiking conditions, we got rid of the spikes once we got out the woods as the summit area is just about melted out.

Its straight up cold up here today. On a good note, calling for low 60's around Conway this weekend. We definitely are headed back up to hike Chocorua. Going to take the Champney Trail. Our first overnight is coming up, woo hoo.

Don't tell me what it's like. I've been meaning to hike Chocorua for years and the one year I came the closest one of the women in our group stubbed her toe badly the morning we were supposed to go up.
Lots of history in that area. One of my favorite books is the Stiers/McAdow Into the Mountains by AMC books. Great history of early exploration and settlement of the mountain regions of New England.

Ha great picture. It's about 80 degrees here in south florida which is basically winter conditions for us so I can't complain. I hate when I hear people complain about the snow. Nothing more beautiful than hiking in the woods right after a good storm.
