Bear Canister "required" if overnight in this area up through the end of May.

Has anyone overnighted in this area this spring?
Did you have a "Bear Carnister"?
Does anyone check?
Has anyone been caught for not having one?
Were you fined or just given a warning?

The bears check. And that's why the rule is in place.

For the safety of the bears and yourself, please follow it.

Now thats a great answer.

Its only 5 miles, plan accordingly. Or wait til June 2.

Most hikers nowadays just hike through this section. It's not a stretch. Going NOBO, you have plenty of shelters and campsites before you hit it and Mountain Crossings/Neels Gap at the end. Also, the top of Blood Mountain, where the Blood Mountain shelter is located, is probably the most popular day hike on the AT in GA and becomes crazily crowded with noisy day hikers most weekends/holidays. Remember that the rules are there not just for the humans, but also for the bears. A habituated bear becomes a nuisance bear, and then becomes a dead bear.
