I just got back a few hours ago from a drive up to Camp Creek Bald firetower and a hike down to Little Laurel shelter.I'd heard that the shelter was a terrible mess with by-products from the recent virus outbreak.I was greeted by a note.21143 Oh well it wasn't that bad. Some idiot did leave me a 5lb bag of trash on the bear cables.21144After getting that down I cleaned the sleeping platform with bleach21145 Then I sprayed the walls with 50/50 bleach&water. Also sprayed the privy really good also. While I was there about 25 thru hikers passed by and some stopped for water&lunch21146 I left a new broom&shovel,Thanks Dogwood21147 Well after that I used my small chainsaw and cut a little firewood. Before leaving I collected trash from several thru hikers to be packed out.It seemed like before the day was out I had met almost 50 thru hikers.Several of them had heard that some shelters were bio-hazard areas and most of them were avoiding shelters and tenting.I had a good time meeting and talking with some of this season's northbounders.A little clean-up is no problem,I enjoy helping to keep the AT a nice place.Just another day for the 1 man trail crew.Happy hiking to all:sun

First thanks for your work as a maintainer.
I sure hope the virus isn't the same as so many hikers had last year, at least in New England.

Do you do windows? :D Yes I have been known to do windows. The problem is that I don't like it too much so the hourly rate is kinda steep..... Over the years I have worn many hats. The way I see it if one can walk around the woods with all your gear in all kinds of weather, there isn't much you can't do.I do not do plumbing.I ain't no dang turdbuster

Did you cut down some of the trees around the firetower? Last time I was there, there was little to see except leaves.

No,any trees that may have been cut were cut around the power line&transformer close to the tower.Anyway if more trees were cut it wouldn't help much.Several new buildings near the tower block most of the views....

Whats the prescribed burn look like? I haven't been over to it yet. They did one last year starting at Round Knob ORV road terminus to just past the Big Firescald relo north end.I watched it green up and couldn't tell much difference for several weeks after.Your tax $$ at work....

Mr. Cleaner, I thank you as well for all your hard work! One question--why not park down at Log Cabin Road and hike downhill AFTER working instead of carrying all that stuff uphill after working so hard?? Just wondering.

Mr. Cleaner, I thank you as well for all your hard work! One question--why not park down at Log Cabin Road and hike downhill AFTER working instead of carrying all that stuff uphill after working so hard?? Just wondering. I usually park there and backpack over to Jerry's Cabin shelter, clean up then camp somewhere. The next day ,hike out and clean up Little Laurel on the way back.Yesterday I had to pack in bleach,a new broom&shovel and pack the chainsaw too. It's 1.2 miles from the firetower to LL and it's 3.5 miles from Log Cabin Rd. up to LL.I wanted to get in early to start cleaning(I wasn't sure how much needed to be done) and then have a short hike out.I got back to my truck at 5:40 and back to Greeneville about 6:15.Having to pack in all the extra stuff was the reason for parking closer on that trip.FWIW it takes the same amount of gas to get there whether I stay 1 day or 3 days....

Thanks for the reply....I just remembered how straight uphill the climb was from the shelter. Keep up the good work, it really is appreciated!!!!

I read the post yesterday and just cant get it out of my head. The photos were great. I can't help but think of the last stomach bug I had. I was laid up for 2-3 days- wrenching etc. I told my wife to call 911- I thought I was going to die. I tried to picture the same experience while out on the trail- I may have died? Then I switched gears, started thinking about the man that cleaned it up- a man to be honored. I can picture several sick people at a shelter like that- like out of a movie or something. I never like shelters for some reason, this does not encourage me to visit them unless I had to
