I just got back from a hike in the spy rock area. First indication I had of the situation was folks waking people up at Priest shelter last night, to ask about a missing day hiker. George Carr , age 64 from Bristow ,Va last seen at spy rock Saturday 4/20 @ 4:30 PM. This AM State Police chopper was flying in the area, I talked to Gator guy who was transporting k-9 search teams this morning. On my way out I passed news vehicle, and 5 state police vehicles heading up. This guy has no gear , was wearing a sweatshirt. Last night temps were below freezing in the area. I hope they find this guy alive, and soon.

WSET- ABC 13 ,Lynchburg will probably air something on tonight's news. It was pretty impressive seeing resources pouring into the area for the search. I'm curious about his condition , my experience in the area ending prior to his being found. I did spend some time thinking about how many times I've been approached on the trail by someone out with a group, asking if I've seen so and so- It's late in the day, very few of the "10 essentials" in evidence, the group became separated. Accidents happen, but poor prep and planning can be just as devastating. Last night was posterboy grade for hypothermia. I'm so glad this story has a happy ending.

Thanks again scudder- I'll try to catch it on the evening news. WSET. aficion & all of us in the area are happy for this ending. You bring up some good things to keep in mind. :)

Spy Rock area has a healthy rattlesnake population. May be a good thing it was coldish. Glad he's fine and still has his sense of humor.

Exactly what I was thinking. I saw three in about 1 1/2 miles the last time I was through there.

According to the Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills (http://www.whiteblaze.net/wiki/Mountaineering:_The_Freedom_of_the_Hills), the ten essentials are:[3] (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/#cite_note-3)

Not sure I agree 100% with this list for the AT, thoughts?

Not sure I agree 100% with this list for the AT, thoughts? The links in your post did not work for me. The Mountaineers have updated their 10 essentials and call them systems now, so map and compass are combined and called navigation. The most significant change, in my opinion, is that they've added shelter to the list. The general idea is that you be equipped to respond to an accident,or emergency, and can safely spend the night. Lots of different outdoor organizations have their own version of the list. Some mention footwear, raingear, a whistle. Having this stuff does not guarantee a safe, trouble free trip, but I believe it increases your odds. You don't need any of this stuff until you do. You can walk around wet, hungry, cold, and lost and still survive sometimes. You can trust that your group leader will take care of everything. Bottom line- the choices you make matter, and you just may have to deal with it on your own for awhile. When I wrote the earlier comment about the ten essentials, I was thinking specifically about a youth group doing the white oak canyon-cedar run loop in the SNP last year, looking for some guy late in the day. These gals were wearing strappy leather sandals with heels, some of them had a water bottle and that was it.
