Has anyone ever had an issue with leaving their car unattended for a length of time at either Fontana dam or in the gsmnp?

"in the gsmnp" is pretty broad.
You wouldnt want to leave your car at davenport gap, for instance.

Fontana is regarded as safe, and we had no problems there.
Since its a big dam, its well lit and monitored for homeland security, or so they say.

Check on this site http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org/ look under NC/TN

Also check with the maintaining club (find info at http://www.appalachiantrail.org)

Remember not to leave any food odors in your car, any bags visible to bears, and close your windows tightly ... http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=fBnGe9HDGBI&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DfBnGe9HDGBI

Just wondering, at Fontana Dam do you leave your car parked at the visitor center or is there parking elsewhere?

Yep, just park at the visitor center.

Fontana is safe.
Newfound Gap? Only 1 time in 15 years that I know of there was a problem.
Some stupid broke some car windows....about 6 cars....driver's side or passenger side window, but didn't steal anything?
Davenport Gap? There's only room for 4 cars maybe so don't even think you'll have a spot to park there after driving up from Florida. And yes there's been a few random problems there.
You'll have more problems at a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Cool, it was suggested by one of the shuttle services that I park at Fontana so I can just hop in my car and take off once I had showered

At the South end you can park at Fontana Dam, at the north end at Big Creek Ranger station (1.5 miles from AT).
