I'm considering making a pack but I know next to nothing about fabrics. I'd like to know what is the lightest fabric that comes the closest to the ruggedness of 1000 D Cordura.

Thanks.

That stuff is rugged! Theres 500D cordura.
What are you planning on putting the pack through?
Lots of people use 200D Oxford as their heaviest pack fabric

500d Cordura is pretty rugged, and I use it for the hunting packs I make. There is also 330d. If you want to cut weight in your pack, but keep some abrasion resistance, I suggest using 200d Oxford for the main body and 330d or 500d for the bottom. That will take a lot of the wear when you set your pack down.

I believe the full dyneema fabric Dan McHale uses is around 200D. That stuff might actually exceed the ruggedness of 1000D cordura. Even if Dan would sell it to you, and he won't, it'd be really expensive.

You could try begging Ursack to sell you some of their full dyneema fabric.

We have a range of CORDURA® fabrics from ballistic 1000d to 30d CORDURA® Ultralite fabric. If you give us more info about the pack and what kinds of applications you’d be using it for, we’d be happy to help you think through the best fabric and where to purchase it. http://www.cordura.com/en/about/contact.html (http://www.cordura.com/en/about/contact.html)

Sailor,
Cut the nylon fabric with a hot knife or bind the seams with lighter weight nylon seam tape. Raw edges unravel like crazy.

You're welcome. Take a look inside well made packs. The seams will be covered.
Good luck.
