There are many types of Tyvek but generally for hiking you want Homewrap (insulating house material) for a groundsheet. This may be available from your local hardware store
not really breathable, hard at first and somewhat waterproof.
Or, the other type is 1443r the "fabric/soft" type used for bivvies/tarps/shelters.The soft type may only be available from kite supply shops or EBay in by the yard sizes.

This is soft ,breathable but more water resistant than water proof.
The two are not all that similar...

I used to scavenge it, with permission, from home building sites--dumpster diving, in short. I even did that while I was hiking once to replace a worn out sheet. But that's not happening much in the past four years, certainly not in AZ, so Franco's suggestion is what I would follow.

Amazon.com for the kite material grade - I got mine there, as it seems one day the houses are "nekkid" and the next day they are wrapped with no remnants. We also have HUGE signs on construction dumpsters that say it's a felony if you pull something out, even with permission. I bought 3 yards, intending to cut it to fit, but I just fold it over and use the spare material in my vestibules.

Good luck.

My experience is that you can not get it off the roll at the box stores, I don't care what you here. I check all of them at different locations too. They will not break a roll. Mom and pop type shops will not do it either. the best way to get it by the yard is from the purveyors on line.

BTW, my post was more about pointing out that there are several types so the question should really be :Tyvek for what use? (or what type of Tyvek, waterproof or breathable ?)
