So I've started putting together my new gear list and wanted your help.

The big three:

I'm building my kit around this key chain back pack -- I know, a little heavy at 4 ounces, but I want to err on the side of comfort:
Detailed Product Description

The "go anywhere, fit anywhere" key chain pouch that becomes a pack.
Just look how small! Handy little mini pouch hooks onto a belt loop, the D-ring of a backpack, the strap of a purse...or whatever works for you. It's the perfect key chain too! A mere 4.5" x 2.5" x 1", it fits into the smallest places and doesn't get in the way.

for sleeping, this silk liner should be fine -- but only for three seasons. I'll ditch the stuff sack and wear it as a sarong during the day:

I'll pair the liner with 1/8" packing foam for a pad.

Finally, a .5 mil drop cloth completes the list, all for well under one pound.

Clothing, by the way? It may be overkill, since I can wear the silk liner... but I thought for laundry day I should bring:

can you help me cut down a bit?

Well, if you stand behind the dryers isle.... No need for the unmentionables, then the other hand, if you get caught you won't have anything to wear on jail....maybe just trim it a bit.:D

Cut some holes in your tarp to lighten it up. May want to try that on your modesty-wear also. :)

Just use pockets on clothing for stuff. Then you don't need a pack. 4 ounces saved right there. Save space in a pocket for the 0.5 mil plastic, sleep in the clothes you have on and save the weight of the silk liner. Bring matches to make a mound fire to stay warm. Now we're talking NanoSUL.

Why even bother with the SU, QiWiz. Why not just go "Nanolight." It could be the new thing, the new fad. "Get your baseweight under 8 ounces. Find out now in xyz magazine." Disclaimer: search and rescue not included. Not available in all states. Check local listings. Your mileage may vary. Results not typical of the average customer...

Well, you only need one kidney, so get rid of one & that is almost a pound saved !

Not sure how much a second-hand kidney sells for on EBay these days, but I reckon you could get enough to fund a decent hiking trip !

Less weight, and more money !.......Now that is what I call a win- win situation!

I had half of my left kidney removed 5 years ago and it only cost $42,000. So that's about $84,000/lb.!

see, even in a humor thread White Blaze is full of information useful to the serious nanolight backpacker.

by the way, I actually got to see that new 4 ounce pack -- someone gave one of them to my daughter. Pretty sweet... I mean, for a key chain pack and all...

Hmmm. I'm thinking you could lighten your kit even further without a cook kit. Just hold the water in your hands and let your body heat warm it up. You can eat right out of the "bowl" too. No spork. Simply place instant coffee or hot cocoa mix in hands, add water, wait, enjoy!

If you weigh everything in oz, but then enter it as grams, you will cut your load by a factor of almost 30!

At the end of the day, 1 pound is just too much weight to carry. After my thru-hike I reached a state of enlightenment and had the ultimate epiphany. I'm SO ultralight, I don't even hike...
