I'll be section hiking from Hot Springs to about Elk Park with my dog this coming week. I took him hiking around Falls Lake outside of Raleigh for some practice. We were out there for about 36 hrs and during our hike and after I pulled close to 100 ticks off of him. No Exaggeration. A few days before we left I treated him with vector bought from my vet. Most of the ticks I found on him were dead, but I spent hours combing through his fur picking out ticks. What do you do. My dog loves Hiking and I love taking him but I don't feel like its right putting him at risk like that. We hiked all day and after I set up camp all I wanted to do was relax but I had to spend all my time picking those ticks off. I am aware of permethrin and will probably treat his pack and my gear with it, but was just wanting some advice on how to deal with these buggers. Not so much for my sake but for my k9's. Thanks.

When these products claim to kill ticks the tick must bite and get a blood meal...So the tick can take up to 8 hours to die while running around in the dog hair. I have to admit if I am going off trail or where leaf litter is around on a section hike I spray the dog down with Deep Woods Off but not around the face. As its a really good repellant.

I can easily believe that you found 100 ticks in three days, my record is 68 ticks between myself and my dog in four hours. Fun huh?

We've been using a spray called zero bite on the dogs when we go on local trails for a year or so and it works really well. I haven't carried it on a multiday hike yet, but I imagine it could be repackaged into a smaller bottle to use on trips.

I recommend spraying it on a towel and wiping it on your dog to avoid getting it into their eyes.

We use Frontline on our dog. I've never found a tick on him. We may just be lucky though.

We use frontline and have found ticks on the outside of his coat. The big dog ticks are easier to detect, its the little bastards that I worry about. Frontline seems to help. Ironically enough, we do not find ticks on him when we are in the Whites, its when we go to our local trail that we find them.
