Anybody doing any interesting hikes over the long upcoming weekend? I'm planning on hiking from the Standing Indian area northwards to the NOC. Will I see any Whiteblazers out there? Maybe we should develop some sort of secret greeting to identify ourselves? Happy hiking. :)

Bland to Atkins most likely for Memorial Day weekend, though I might do Dickey Gap to Rhododendron Gap (Grayson Highlands) if weather is really good. Might be hiking near Erwin, TN the week afterwards, work permitting.

Springer to Neels Gap.

First time ever setting foot on the AT. Preparing for my thru next year, figured I might as well see if I can hack it. Don't have a bear canister--do they still have the restrictions around Blood Mountain?

I would like to park at DWG on Saturday morning, and get a shuttle north, to hike south back to DWG. Maybe to Route 206? Are either of you other DWG hikers going that way.

It's not AT this weekend but it is a shakedown for my AT section in June: Taking my son to a state park here in Ohio for his first real backpacking trip. We're both super excited!

Three-day, tw0-night loop in the Smokies over Gregory Bald. Won't be on the AT, but Gregory Bald is only a couple miles from the AT in the GSMNP.

Nice! I'm staying relatively local too and heading up to the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin with my wife (her first trip) and kids. 3 days - about 45 miles. Should be a good time!!

I am going out to Montana to play in the snow and spring runoff in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Certain to be a very challenging adventure.

I love walking in the Bob. It took years to walk back east after my first time out there.

Looks like I will be testing my rain gear. Doing Tumbledown and Little Jackson up here in Maine (over nighter). Not a hard hike, but a good test of the gear.

The secret to identifying a WB member in the wild is to ... Oh wait, most of us don't hike. We just bitch about others enjoying their hike. ;)

Just did a little day hike at Muskegon State Park, MI. Saw a Scarlet Tanager on a branch not 10 yards away. Posed there for a several minutes. So excited I forgot to take a picture. Got a little lost when we missed the cut-off trail to make a loop hike. It looked like we were going to end up at the wrong trail head, a couple of miles from the car, but then found a trail, not on the map going the right direction and we were saved. Hiking up and down dunes is hard work. The pics show the view from the ridge of the dunes looking down on the lighthouse at the mouth of the river channel and the beach. Looking up at the ridge from the beach you can see that someone left a trace. Fortunately tree branches on sand leave no permanent damage - Go Wings! And when you are done, you drive in to Grand Have and stand in line for a Pronto Pup or get drinks and nachos at Snug Harbor and then watch the boats in the channel. I think the dog standing in line needs to watch that he doesn't get up stick up the rump and deep fried.

Did a leisurely two-day hike from Toxaway Creek to LaurelValley on the Foothills Trail. Accessedby the Canebrake Trail from Gorges State Park in NC. Saw my first coyote in this area; crossed thetrail less than twenty yards in front of me and then ran soundlessly into theforest.

I was finally able to get my feet down in Grayson Highlands with the Fiancé and the 2 dogs. Can't wait to get back for a 50 miler in the area this fall.

Audie Murphy Monument may be the best Memorial Day hike on the AT second to Mt. Greylock.

Paying respect to John Brown in HF is very respectable as well!
