I'm not sure whether this is the right forum category but I couldn't find a category specific to eye wear.

I use prescription glasses and have both regular distance glasses and prescription sunglasses. However, the prescription sunglasses do not provide full side protection since the frame is more intended for city use or casual activities. I'm thinking about buying Cocoon overglasses which seem reasonably priced at $50 and don't look too bad online. They are designed to be used over my regular prescription glasses. If anyone uses cocoon or another brand of overglasses any input would be great. My preference is to ideally have glacier glasses or sunglasses with better coverage with prescription lenses but right now this is cost prohibitive as well as time prohibitive since I've procrastinated and leave for my trip to the Grand Canyon a week from today.

Thanks.

Never tried them. For a shade more (about $60 at surplus) you can get mil-spec land ops goggles (http://www.opticsplanet.com/ess-striker-land-ops-goggles.html). (Link is for information only. I've never done business with the vendor. It was just the first picture of the things that I found on Google.) They come with clear and grey lenses standard; amber lenses for snow travel are available. They're authorized by the military for wear over prescription glasses. They fog in cold weather, but doesn't everything?

I wonder if they fog in the heat. I use clear landscapers safety glasses for the gnats and they work pretty good till I start huffing and puffing and then they fog.

I use this style of sunglasses all the time. They are called generically fitovers (fit over glasses). The lenses of the cheaper ones are easily scratched, but last me a year or two if I'm careful. The cheapest ones are often given out for free after cataract surgery (got my first pair from an elderly aunt). They are great for side protection. They work well over prescription glasses, but I wouldn't say they're fashionable. I've occasionally seen them in drug stores for $5. My current ones were about $20 from Amazon. Here's a pair that are similar:

I'd rather have a couple pair of the $20 ones than the coccoons.
They come in different sizes, based on the size of your prescription glasses.

I use Fit Overs and love them http://www.fitovers.com/ the only thing I worry about is that they might get crushed in my pack when I'm not wearing them. I just found a large hard shell case for them. (now I just have to decide if I want to carry the case!)

Thanks for all the replies. Amazon offers free return shipping on sunglasses so I went ahead and ordered the cocoons at no risk. I'll post when I get them on Thursday to describe how they worked out.
