Once again, tortoises get forgotten, cast aside for their fancy-pants cousins, the turtles.

Not at all...World Turtle Day was started by American Tortoise Rescue.

Think I'll cook up a pot of turtle stew for the occasion.

At the rate we are capturing them and sending them overseas, you would be lucky enough to find enough for stew.

Here is wishing you the very best Turtle Day, Winged Monkey!

I recall that you raise some real beauties-- it's hard to forget your turtle porn.

It was a mild winter and they hardly stopped mating over what was supposed to be winter. I've already got at least 20 eggs incubating over the last few weeks.

Did you know that the female box turtle can store the male's "deposit" and save it for laying fertile eggs, sometimes for up to four years?

Not to hijack the thread, but it's also a huge Buddhist holiday as the full moon of this month is when Buddha supposedly: 1/ was born, 2/ became enlightened, 3 died. ALL on the full moon of this month. (which is the 24th this month, or today!)

Called Visakha Bucha Day in Thailand.

This one's eyes were telling me "You Shall Not PASS!" yesterday on the trail (So. Illinois), but I made it around. Maybe telling him/her Happy World Turtle Day would have made him/her less grumpy.

That's a beautiful shell for a wild Eastern Box Turtle, (Terrapene Carolina Carolina). Usually they have scars or nicks from attempted attacks of forest fires.

It's most likely a male. Male Eastern usually (not always) have orange or red eyes and the females have brown eyes. My Florida Box Turtle subspecies (Terrapene carolina bauri) don't, they all have brown eyes.

You can also tell a male by the conclave on his bottom shell (plastron), where a female is completely flat. It's for the male riding on top of the female.

Thanks for the extra info! I found the bit about the eyes after I posted the photo, but it's nice to have that confirmed by an expert!

Here's the only other pic I took of him.

Here is the plastron of two young males, you can see the slight conclave to the shell, it gets more pronounced with age. 2175321754 Here are the bottom shells of two females of the same age. 2175521756

That's just super. I hope you have a high hatching rate.

I know today isn't Turtle Day and this wasn't on the AT, but it was found by a hiker and it was a turtle... Pretty neat find by a hiker who brought his find to the attention of a U.S. Bureau of Land Management scientist. Turns out the New Mexico desert was once not so dry. http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/11/04/fossilized-turtle-believed-to-have-lived-tens-millions-years-ago-excavated-in/

Crying shame that the Gypsy Joynt moved out of Great Barrington.

They had the makings of an AT institution.

Tell me about it. I have friends that live about 3 streets over and it quickly became a favorite. At least there’s still the Baba Louie’s take-out window.
