This is a long shot but here goes:

My 11 year old nephew would like to try backpacking...so, if possible, I am looking to borrow a kid's backpack for a two day trip next weekend.
:banana
I live in Germantown, MD but would be willing to go pretty much any where in the D.C area to pick up and return a pack. Also, I will be glad to leave a deposit...so you don't have to worry about getting your pack back!

P.S. I know I could probably rent a pack from REI for the weekend...but I would rather wait and see how far my nephew is able to hike before I shell out $50 for what may turn out to be a one night trip! :(

Have you checked with REI about renting a backpack? I know that some REIs rent equipment.

You're going to be spending some gas money just to borrow a pack.

For $60, you could buy a kid's backpack from REI (delivered): http://www.rei.com/product/830282/rei-comet-pack-kids-special-buy

This particular kid's pack is about as light as any other REI sells (only the Deuter Fox 30 is lighter... and that is by only 1 oz, yet the Comet is 20% larger). The Comet is the pack my 10yo (almost 11) is currently using.

I have a mid-1980s Bergan's Viking II Compact that I got when I was ~12 or 13 and used through my mid-20s. It is far from pristine, but it served me well for many trips, including a couple multi-weeks. I'm in Silver Spring, just off NH Ave and 1 mile north of 495. The shoulder straps can be adjusted to accomodate different torso lengths.
