Which sleeping bag would u use if u were to pick one for summer months in Virginia. Most of my hiking has been in the winter or early Spring so need some good solid advice. Thank you in advance!

Most any 40* or even 50* "summer" bag should be fine. And you will likely leave it open to vent most nights. Or go to a lightweight quilt.

I got a 45F Shenandoah quilt from Jacks R Better. Worked very well on a recent early summer hike.

Unless there's some weather anomaly you'll probably find yourself laying on top of your bag. Go light. This time of year for a local hike (I'm in SW VA) sometimes I'll just take a fleece blanket and my pad. If there's some kind of funky weather moving in you should be able to plan for it ahead of time. I had never seen frost after May 15th here and we had frost overnight after then this year but we had several days warning. You don't need much of a bag here this time of year in spite of that though.

I think it depends whether you sleep "warm" or "cold." Take my husband - he sleeps with only one light blanket here at the house in the winter when our thermostat goes down to 57 at night. However, I pile the blankets on.

I hike Virginia in July when the temps never fell below 90 during the day. With a 55 degree bag at night, I was cool....probably because of the drastic changes. I am bringing a 40 degree bag in the future. Sure, I might sleep on top, but I might not! Dicks Sporting Goods carries a Kelty Cosmic Down 40 degree bag for $109 that weighs just under 2 pounds.

For Virginia summer hiking I use a Deuter Dreamlight 500 bag. Its a synthetic fill bag that I picked up a couple years ago on sale, though it looks like they are running between $75 to $95. Rated for 50 degrees with its extreme low temp being 40 degrees. My bags weighs in at 1lbs 2oz.

What about switching out to one or two army poncho liners from Pearisburg to Hanover? Would that be enough with a liner and clothes?

Travel light and freeze at night.

I recently bought a pair of Mountain Hardware UltraLamina 32 degree synthetic bag, 2lbs, about $150 from Campmor.

By comparison, the Atom is less than 1-1/2lbs.
