I'll start... I live 5 miles from the trail crossing in Daleville VA. :banana

Some others already answered this question in the Hikerboy Cafe (great place to chat- btw) I found their answers interesting- soooo how bout y'all? How far do you have to travel to step your foot on the AT? If you already answered in the Cafe feel free to post again here....

You got it, HM.

As the crow flies I'm really only about 5 miles from the trail but thanks to a mountain and a river (the Potomac) it takes me 15 minutes to get to Weverton Cliffs from my house.

Stright line, about 3.5 miles. By trail about 4.5. I have to climb up the side of Mt Adams to intersect the AT and it's about a 1/4 mile road walk to get to the trail head from here...

Google Maps tells me that I live 1,054 miles from the closest point on the AT at the footbridge over I-70 near Hagerstown, MD. Drive time is 16 hours and 18 minutes.

I keep moving west, making it ever harder to get to central Maine and to finish my last two sections! My drive time to Rangeley is 23 hours to cover 1,459 miles; which is why I'm flying for these trips nowadays.

mileage varies as does road conditions, but it takes about 3 hours to reach the trail in either CT, MA, VT or NH. For being a state along which the Appalachians "brush", we're inconveniently located.

How fortunate u are to live so close to the trail. Its an 8-10 hr drive for me to get to the trail. The wife and i just spend 3 days down around Springer Mt on the Approach and AT trail. It was so great being out on the trail again but took us a day to get there and a day to get home.
Gas is now up to $4 a gallon so it equates into both time and $'s.
There are so many times I would love to be able to go a week/half week trip but not easy due to the above.

Greetings! Fairly new to WB & enjoying the site greatly. I'm in Western Mass between Worcester & Spfld. Google Maps gives me 75-80 miles to Mt. Greylock in No. Adams. I don't use the 3 options they listed, I drive the local shortcuts/ backroads & it's 57 miles with awesome scenery & small towns. Takes a bit longer, but more often than not I'm on the motorcycle for a day trip. Getting a ride at the end of the month for a 3 day NOBO. Starting my conditioning for a planned SOBO Thru in 2014. Will be out quite a bit between now & next June. Thinking about a Long Trail Thru in Sept. Hope to meet some of the WB family in the process. BTW, I'm all for the separate forum suggestion I read........ for Go Slow Hikers, like me!!!! I'm into the nature around me when I get out, so 15 miles is a BIG day for me......I'm more inclined to "stroll" 8-10 & be happy with it. As a recently retired firefighter in a pretty good sized & busy city, it's time for me to pedal back some. Peace all!

Why do you think I usually post when most of you are sleeping.
Don't know how many miles but it's about a 22 hour flight(s).
Sometimes I go by way of Europe, sometimes by way of CA.
This year I'll be stopping at Tahoe and do some hiking on the Tahoe Rim trail on my way back.

Yeah, I'm from Sch. Haven but have a family here in Phuket, Thailand.
It's an island in the south of Thailand.

Been working on designing a 100 mile hiking trail here for 8 years now.
I hope to finish it this year.
Been out on it a lot lately.
I guess you could say I miss hiking.

Gonna climb the highest peak in SE Asia in 2 weeks. Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo
The AT was my introduction to adventure.

I do still get out on the AT almost every year.
I get back there for my company's selling season every fall.

This is a job for Google Earth. Using the ruler function, it is 8646 mile from the clock tower in the center of Phuket city to the closest point on the AT (Katahdin summit).

So that got me thinking. Who lives the furthest from the AT? I found that this this house in Windy Harbour, Western Australia is 11,627 from the closest point of the AT (which is also Katahdin).

That's just awesome stuff right there Odd Man Out... OZ will particularly find this interesting. I would like to propose an announcement of the person(s) that lives the furthest from the trail and also the one that lives the closest to the trail. We could set a time on when this "announcement" will occur as to get everyone to post their miles/yards from the trail. I would like to put you in charge, Odd Man Out, if you are willing.

I think Fiddlehead and Oz would come in close to being the furthest away -out of the country. We could do a furthest from the trail within the USA too.

Slo and Peakbagger are lucky to live so close to the Whites. :)

I'm really enjoying reading everyone's post on here... thanks for sharing y'all. :banana If this were Facebook I would put a "like" on every single post letting y'all know I read it and I like it! :)

Unless you want to keep hiking the same part near you over, and over, and over, eventually, you may need to travel at least 1000 miles in each direction to hike toward each end. Even if you live 100 ft from it.

Not necessarily true. But of course this only applies to me...

The nearest point of the AT to me would be about Waynesboro, Virginia at 150 miles and a 2 1/2 hour drive. Baxter State Park is 890 miles from where I live, and Springer Mt is 580 miles.

Damascus is 360 miles and is about 6 hours.
Daleville is 230 miles and 3 1/2 hours
Snickers Gap is 175 miles and 3 hours
Harpers Ferry is 200 miles and 3 1/2 hours
Pine Grove about 5 hours

Will you be going to Gettysburg for the 150th anniversary in July?

Hoping to! Thing is there could be 50,000 or more people up there for the re-enactment, so traffic is a huge deal. We thought we'd take our trailer up so that we could just walk to it all from a local campground but the campgrounds nearest it were already booked up. We do take visitors up there and my outdoors group is going to bike the road around the battlefield in late July.

It seems my first calculations were slightly off. SW Australia is slightly closer to Springer Mt than Katahdin. So measuring from Springer, the town that is the furthest from the AT is Prevelly at 11,347 miles from Springer. Downtown Perth is almost as far at 11,272, so unless we have someone living a few miles further south, then Oz is definitely the winner. And here is another oddity for you. If your were standing on Springer Mtn and wanted to take the shortest great circle route straight towards Perth, you would have to head about 3 degrees north of due west.

Hummm....I recently talked to a guy that works at the outfitter in Daleville. I didn't get his name. He lives in Troutville. When I was asking him if he ever got on WB (he doesn't) it came out that I was HikerMom. Right away said... "No way... so you're HikerMom! After my face turned 100 shades of red, and him assuring me that it was all good ... LOL! He said that someone had come in to the Outfitters asking about "Hikermom" in Nov./Dec. and told me that they thought that his mom or his wife was me. I bet that's the Hickey family, you are speaking of... they are planning on opening a hostel in Troutville. That's their plan and their dream. :) Does that ring a bell? That's really funny!! :)

Sorry Coach Lou, I didn't mean to ignore you, I haven't checked this thread for some time as you can see. Yep I am up by Lake Erie. PA is a fairly big state when going East to West. I drove to the trail at DWG a couple weeks ago and can't remember the miles but I think it was around 350.

407 miles to Springer Mountain with an elevation gain from 25ft above sea level to 3780 feet above sea level. Obviously, no mountains where I live, but the kayaking is great!

Back in about 1975, I grew up in Keys Gap, near Harpers Ferry, WVA. The AT ran right through our property, due to some confusion about property lines and survey markers. My father and I moved an old fence line back a hundred feet or so, so that the hikers would have full access to the trail and the spring (now long dried up) that was on "our" side. Dad was a big proponent of ecology, conservation and the outdoors generally. Heck, as an 8 or 9 year old, I was walking the trail before I knew where it started and ended, picking up trash from the (now long gone) shelter. Matter of fact, just a few hundred feet before you cross Route 9, at the WVA/VA line, look to your left, going NOBO and you will see a white house with a tennis court in the front yard. (Yes, a tennis court) That was my boyhood home, and pretty much the end of my NOBO hike in 2015. Goin' Home.

Too far. About a 2.5 hour drive heading either west or north. Wife and I are discussing where we want to live when we retire (hopefully soon!) and of course I'm arguing for a location much closer to the trail, maybe somewhere in the Berkshires.

My home is 3.7 miles from 3 different trailheads in SW Virginia. There is talk of my putting it on the market within the next 18 months sometime.

7 miles or 20 minutes from the RT 40 trailhead. Hence I hike the AT more than nothing else.

5 hrs by plane, but it hasn't stopped us from flying to Maine (twice), Atlanta, and BWI (many times) primarily to hike parts of the AT, often for the 2d or 3rd time. Coming again in Oct 2014 for two weeks.

We live about 3 miles from the LT/At where it crosses Route 140 in Wallingford, VT. I take a short walk on the trail about every day. Meet a Sobo today, Buckeye. He was doing great and in great spirits.
