I've read both of these books, plus his book on Camino de Santiago. The AT book was his first, and it shows in the rough writing style, but still worth the read. I think the Camino was his third, but I just didn't appreciate his experience on that trail as a description of a backpacking trip (I've decided not to tackle the Camino once I finish the AT). I think that his PCT book was the best, by far. He likely learned a lot from his first attempt; the topic was interesting and he added a lot of interesting stories; and he probably had a very good editor.
