Found a Leatherman Wave in our office left by an employee that was allowed to rust... took about two hours of 000 steel wool and teflon oil to get it back to usable status. Won't do this again... but Its a nice Wave!

The best way to remove rust, is with electrolysis. All it takes is a bucket, battery charger, and baking soda.

My buddy keeps a 55 gallon drum in his garage rigged up for taking rust off things.

He bought several large shop tools that were totally rusted up from a salt water flood, including a Bridgeport mill , for $500 total.

Using electrolysis he de-rusted all the parts, blasted, painted, reassembled. He did have to replace some parts, switches, bearings, etc.
But he ended up with ~$6000-$7000 worth of equipment that looks brand new, I think in all he spent about $1000.

If you were gonna do this on a small scale, exactly how would you rig it up. How much water, baking soda, etc.

I've cleaned the barrels on old milsurp rifles the same way. The Scott electricity flows from + to - so you hook the plus connection to the metal you want to clean. The negative goes to your sacrificial hunk of steel. It all goes in the liquid, though I used ammonia solution. Sacrificial piece will turn black, the solution will bubble.

I think that either make.com or instructables.com will have several detailed descriptions of how to do this.
