Apparently a famous hunter lived up there, and his roosters perched high up in a tree. I don't think I have read a shelter register since reading the one just north of there. Of course, Norovirus, etc. has something to do with that.

Rash,
If you do decide to shed your clothes it would probably be smart to keep your feet on the ground and not be climbing trees to pet baby porcupines. I'm headed to the beach on that day so I won't be hiking. Stay safe, Iceman

A few years back I took my 16 year old stepson on a section hike. We Met some thru hikers at the Pearisburg Hostel & when the topic of Hike Naked Day came up one hiker admitted to hiking in only two bandannas worn kinda like a native American breech-cloth. In the hiker box, Mikey picked up a bandanna. He wore it as a scalp cap & at one break on the climb his eyes suddenly widened. He wondered if his head cover was the one used for that day.

Passed a nude hiker with my 10 year old son at Thanksgiving 2010 coming down Blood Mtn to Neels Gap. It was raining so I told my son he must have not wanted to get his clothes wet. I doubt he had any problems with bugs, but you think it would have been pretty cold for him. I guess his choice, his pain.

Meanwhile authorities have called off their search for a nude female hiker on a vision quest: http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2021167792_nakedhikerxml.html

Those who want to try hiking naked had better be clear on possible consequences of hiking on federal land in their birthday suits, it is probably written somewhere in their code that clothes are not optional but whether they enforce it, is at their discretion.

Good point. Its like mooning the cog. Against the law but not enforced. Except when it is. A few years ago 3-4 hikers got nailed with a $150ish ticket.

I don't have to worry - the feathers are embeddedOh yes, you do have to worry http://www.treetopbird.com/Feather-Loss-and-Desctruction-s/225.htm

Causes of lack of feather regrowth or abnormal feather regrowth:
--Viral infection (polyoma, psittacine beak and feather disease virus)
--Fungal or bacterial infection
--Nutritional deficiency (especially for birds on an all seed diet)
--Endocrine disease (hypothyroidism)
--Stress or debilitation
--Liver disease
--Polyfolliculitis (a poorly understood disease that affects budgies and lovebirds)
--Feather cysts
--Knemidokoptes (the scaly face mite); usually affects the face and legs rather than the body; usually just budgies and canaries
--VERY old age

Just came through Sam's Gap to Erwin (a little south of Roan), and the rhododendron are late this year. Saw a handful in bloom on Big Bald, and a few azalea. Loads of mountain laurel, though!
