My wife and I will be hiking from Springer to Dicks Crk Shelter. She will be leaving there and visiting my son. I will be hiking into NC. She will be picking me up somewhere in NC and she will be driving a Prius. I see that there is a road going into Standing Bear but I dont know how good a road is. Does anyone know this road or have other suggestions for a better pickup spot. Thanks

Standing Bear is hot shelter, it's somebody's house and a hostel. Cars can drive there easy.

Are you talking about "Standing Indian"? You mention hiking into NC? I'm confused? Isn't Standing Bear a hostel north of the Smokies? :)

As stated above, it is a good gravel road. But if you still have concerns, just let her pick you up at I-40 as you come out of the park.

Also, Dick's Creek is not a shelter. It is a road crossing on Hwy 76 out of Clayton, GA. You may want to invest in an AT Data Book.

The OP is obviously confused. At first glance I also thought he ment Standing Bear Hostel north of GSMNP.

There is a shelter called Deep Gap shelter a few miles south of Dicks Creek gap, aka US76. US 76 is a paved road which can be taken to Hiawassee. At this point your about 9 miles shy of crossing into NC.

If the OP wants to complete GA, he would have to hike up the GA/NC line and return to Dicks creek gap or continue on to Muskrat creek shelter. The first road access out of NC would be at Deep Gap, a few miles north of Muskrat Creek shelter. The road to Deep gap is a dirt, forest service road (#71) but it should be passable for a Prius. I've seen small cars parked at the lot there. As to how to access USFS 71, your on your own.

I still say you may want to invest in a Data Book.

If you are just going over the state line then I'd get your pick up at Standing Indian Campground. Better place to wait for whoever happens to get there first. Plus all paved roads. When you hike into Deep Gap NC then take the 3.5 mile blue blazed Kimsey Creek Trail to the campground.

If you are talking Standing Bear I've never been there so I'm not going to comment. But you could tell her the road sucks and she can pick you up in Hot Springs. Get another couple days of hiking that way. :)

Sorry guys, I never been to GA before. I am not confused just ignorant. Went back and looked at the map and book again. Yes my wife will be leaving the trail at Dick's crk GAP (not shelter) and I meant to say (as many already know) I will be getting off around Standing Indian. How is the road there?

The dirt fs rd to Deep Gap is good and can be driven on with a passenger car.

The paved road to the campground is better. I think your wife would be more comfortable waiting for you there than in the middle of the woods. As a bonus, you can get a shower there for a small fee and she won't have to smell you. :)

OK that sounds good Max. And sounds really good for the wife. Paved road and showers. that's the ticket

to get to the campground you will need to hike down the Kimsey Creek trail to the campground. it's a pretty trail and about 3.5 miles from the parking lot at Deep Gap, NC to the campground.
