My father did a lot to get me into backpacking. He's gone now, but both my kids backpack as well. I'ts been an interesting cycle.

Happy Fathers Day everybody. Best job in the world is raising kids and getting them to enjoy the great outdoors like we do. Nothing better than sitting on top of a mountain enjoying the wonders of nature with you kids.

My dad took me backpacking on the AT in MD (near Washington Monument park). I remember he spent hours waterproofing his ginormous all leather hiking boots (hey, it was the '60's).
Today, my kids gave me this as a Father's Day Present:

They chose well, although it helps that I told them exactly which model I wanted. If it clears up, we'll take a walk to the beach on Lake Michigan this afternoon.
