norovirus began his thru hike in early march. we were able to track his progress north up through pennsylvainia, but havent heard anything about him in two weeks.
i know he was a loner, as most people did not want to hike with norovirus, nor shelter with him.
did norovirus have to get off trail?injury? bad water?homesick?
someone said he was just section hiking, intending to do a complete thru hike next year.
is his thru hike in jeopardy? will norovirus be able to hit katahdin before baxter closes in october?
cant understand why we havent heard anything. hope hes okay.

Last year noro started later so he could make Trail Days. He then flipped at some point in order to travel south through Maine and the Whites in August. Seems like he's ahead of schedule this year. Maybe you'll run into him again in New England.

He was reported to the proper authorities for the graffiti he left in all those shelters. He was arrested and had to pay a $150 fine and thoroughly clean all the shelters. He appealed the case arguing that there is no such thing as a clean shelter and the conviction was overturned. The hikers who accused him were cited for filing a false report as it turned out none of their claims could be substantiated. Since those hikers have gotten off the trail nobody has seen norovirus.

I knew I should have taken a picture! On a section hike last weekend, we saw a trailside tombstone between Sam's Gap and Erwin with the inscription, "Here Lies Norovirus." He must have had someone who cared enough to give him a proper burial.

I think I had a personal introduction to Noro at the hospital I work in shortly before my section hike to Damascus from Springer began in April, under the guise of "Food Poisoning". I say this because I hiked right thru staying at most of the shelters with nary a problem save a head cold the second week, because I had brought my immunity with me. Personally, I'm glad I met him/her when I did.

Norovirus fell victim to a pink blaze, trail name "Purelle" He was making good time and seemed to be pretty strong, but they got together a few times and once he got a taste of steady tail (you know how he loves his tail) he quit the trail when she wasn't making her miles. I guess she wasn't doing well on the rocks in PA and her strength evaporated. Who knows though, trail hookups like that seldom last off trail, so he'll probably be back on soon enough. Last I heard Squirts was hiking with TP for awhile, but Squirts moved faster and TP couldn't keep up. I saw a post from TP that said, "Squirts is running me into the ground..." I overheard some folks saying that Squirts ended up making a bad choice and tented with a lady going by the name of Poison Ivy and Squirts picked up a STD- obviously some itching and burning, but I didn't hear the exact one. I thought I saw Puke and Vomit at the Spring Creek Inn down in Hot Springs, but it turned out to be Over-served and Spins so I headed for bed. That was the trail talk when I was out- hopefully everyone else is hanging in there!

So I went to the doc, to see what he'd say, so I could leave the toilet, sometime today.

I think he got off in summer to go hike out West before returning to the CDC to prepare for another thru attempt in '14.

Educating yourself & practicing good hygiene on the trail ,won't find you hiking with norovirus. :)

Noro was the biggest prick I met on the trail. He just wanted to be friends with nearly everyone but had no manners. He is such a drag.

Nora taught me that I would rather tent as I sleep better that way then using a shelter. Nora also scared me when the other 3 came down with it, but never harmed me. hopefully YMM(not vary)

I was last out in April, Damascus to Erwin..............bulging disk issue since then, was pending for two years then whammo! Not fun
The norovirus to me was freaky, ran into about 80+ NOBO's, a huge percentage had had it or had it. Hotel in Erwin had numerous victims.
Will back there in late March, hope it heads to like Antartica.

I just found this article.. it says that cleanliness of the cruise ship, itself, does not have any thing to do with an outbreak. It's all about people not washing their hands well. That's just gross!
So on the trail, hikers can't wash with hot water and soap soooo a good hand sanitizer and/or the wet hand wipes is the way to go? I use both.

RS.. We are looking forward to hiking thru NJ after this last 100 miles in PA, in the Spring. They say NJ is a hidden gem.. I can't wait! :)
