How do you stop Snickers bars turning into a big gooey mess in the heat and how can you make water lighter? Thanks in advance.....

You should carry your snickers in a small cooler with ice. As far as water, you should carry light water. Deuterium-depleted water (DDW), also known more ambiguously as light water,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deuterium-depleted_water#cite_note-PopSci-1) is water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water) which has a lower concentration than naturally occurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_abundance) of deuterium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deuterium), a heavier isotope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotope) of hydrogen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen) which has, in addition to its one proton, a neutron, roughly doubling the mass of the hydrogen atom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_mass).

Buy M&M's (or don't hike in the heat) instead and carry less of it by planning ahead of time.

dehydrate the snickers and the water before packing them in the summer

seriously, Quest bars, while a little expensive, do not melt in the heat. We are thinking of taking them on our next trip. They have lots of protein.

Hi...

Just freeze some 'cold packs' and pack your meltables with them. The M & Ms are also a good idea.

Or, you could freeze-dry some ice cubes...!! :)

Yes just walk up to the front gate of your Friendly, Fun, Fission Center (aka Nuclear Power Plant), present them your Nalgenes or other water container and ask for a fill up. Bonus points, if you then pick up your cell phone and start speaking Arabic.

WB should have buttons that allow me to click: "This made me laugh and made my lousy rainy day better, so thanks."

I probably ate 200 Snickers bars during my thru. I never had a problem with them melting. As far as the water. Drink as much as you can at the water sourse and don't carry more than you need. during my thru I carryed a 1lt Platerpus and a 16 oz Nylgene back up. only ran out once. How much you carry depends a lot on how much water you require. all hikers have different requirements.

Snickers has the same mouth watering melting point. My understanding is Hershey Kisses now has a slight higher melt point since they are stuffed in MRE and were used in Iraq. place them closer to your water bottle or bladder.

If you carry oxygen and twice as much hydrogen, you could combine them when you reach your camping spot.

pack snickers bars deep inside your pack with clothes or something as insulation around them. If it is really hot.. then don't carry snickers bars.

Milk chocolate starts to melt at 86 degrees. Dark chocolate at 89 degrees. Hershey's had a Tropical Bar made for the military but last made them in 1991 for Desert Storm. Tootsie rolls were developed for WWI as a high temp alternative for chocolate. There is a fairly new type of chocolate process that brings the melting temp to above 104 degrees but not much is being made with this chocolate yet.

You don't need to carry the oxygen. It makes up 20% of the atmosphere. So just carry the hydrogen, burn it to cook your meal, and capture to water produced in the combustion reaction to drink. Not only will this cut the weight of water by a factor of 9, you won't have to carry fuel for your stove either.

I dunno how to do either of those, but have you tried Payday candy bars? They hold up pretty well in heat.
