Seems Viruses are good hikers and can have astonishing good mileage but their hike is categorized as supported.:)

Sometimes a thinning of the herd is needed...just kidding ;) I got the Gorham plague on my thru-hike and I survived.

Just wondering if the norovirus is still spreading up the AT?

Just a reminder: hand sanitizer doesn't work on norovirus. Bleach does.

Apparently about 21 million people a year in the US catch this virus, so the chances of it finding you is actually pretty good. That's like 1 out of every 15 people on average.

I suppose it's possible that someone who was infected on the AT then went to the hotel in question either as a guest or worker and started this out break. Maybe a 1 in 15 chance?

A Copy and paste from the article ( It also stated that bleach will work also )

Norovirus notice
Signs are being posted along the Appalachian Trail south of Maryland. Signs read "A.T. shelters and privies may have been used by sick hikers" and information includes ways to "help prevent spread of highly contagious 'stomach bug'":
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Treat all water. Use best "leave-no-trace" practices.
- (Alcohol-based) hand sanitizers may not be effective against the stomach bug.
- Stomach bug has a 12- to 48-hour incubation period, lasts 24 to 60 hours and may cause severe diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. - People with stomach bug may be contagious for three days to two weeks after recovery.

Hope they close down the seaport of Madagascar or we all are in trouble. Does anyone recognize the reference ?

Anyway though I made it thru that section without catching it I have seen the results. It sucks and there seems to be no good answers. Too bad it seems to be spreading.

I think all this sickness is great! It's Mother Nature doing what she does best. Kill off the weak. I love life:)

I heard that a thru hiker who was bored one night hacked Google, they released the virus.

The only prevention is hand washing with soap and water for 15 seconds, do not touch anything before you eat, not even the wrapper of the candybar you are about to eat, the virus may have been left on that wrapper by someone else. there is no way to prevent a food handler from passing this on to you. Hand sanitizers do not kill norovirus. This bug is oral-fecal. That means someone's poop in on your hands or food to your belly.

What is the best water treatment for this? I usually just filter.
