I admit that I haven't undergo a thorough research ;-) but I spoke to two guys who are racing sailboats over the course of of last few days. I told them about CF use in backpacking and that CF was initially developee for sailing... neither one knew anything about Cuben Fiber.

Here is the history. Interesting to know the name was initially a derogatory reference to America's Cup sailing crew.

I found out early that cuben fiber was repurposed from sailing. I immediately thought back of America's Cup yachts I saw so many years ago that had translucent plastic sails and wondering how it was possible, and then I knew.

Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't seen this before.
