It's is just a FYI for those hiking the trail! I did an overnight on the trail with my dog from Cheaha TH to Adams Gap a month ago! When I got home as always I checked us both carefully for ticks! I found no ticks on me but I did pull two from my dog! Long story short he started showing signs of illness about a week after we got home! He was diagnosed with RMSF! He continues to receive antibiotics and we are hopeful for a full recovery!
Please be diligent about checking both your pets and yourselves for ticks after and during each hike! RMSF can be fatal to both humans and animals!
