I thought that maybe it would be fun to try to express our feelings....whatever they might be...in some creative way...just for fun.
Poems, songs, limericks, haikus.....Want to compose an ode to bunions that can be sung to the tune of Gilligan's Island or the Brady Bunch? This is the place to do it. Pour your creative, hiking hearts out.

I'll get things started .... but please don't leave me hangin' !!!! :banana

The Hillbilly Hiker

Stinkin’ of DEET and overworked feet in socks that ain’t had a washin,’
I’m hikin’ a while for 2000 mile; it’s nasty and tough – I ain’t joshin’.
The skeeters and bugs and them bears like the rugs and small critters that run through the lean-to,
the heat, cold and rain and the aches and the pain make me cuss when I don’t even mean to.
But I ain’t complainin’, just frankly explainin’ how this ain’t the fun I was thinkin’,

Still t'ain’t no better way to be spendin’ my day: just a-hikin’ and sweatin’ and stinkin’.

Yee haw.

Here you go Teacher & Snacktime - looking forward to seeing you this Fall.

I came here a year ago to WB hoping to make some friends.
I started out on the wrong foot but quickly made amends.

The friends I've made along the way have been like a dream come true.
You guys will never know just how much I love all of you.

bfayer, T-Rx and KoKo prob. understood me the best of all the ones I "met".
You guys and others like you, I never will forget.

The friends I made in the Cafe are nothing but the best.
You definitely, IMHO, are a cut above the rest.

If y'all (anyone on WB) ever pass through Daleville VA -
There's one thing you'll always know.
You have a friend in HikerMomKD.... but she can't rhyme.

Thank you MDSection12, WOO, Chaco Taco, PapaD, Sampson and T.S.Kobzol for hanging with me and working things out with me. It's so good to have bad feelings replaced with good ones. Thanks again sooo much!

Twas brillig and the slithy pohos,
Did gyre and amble on the trail,
All mimsy were the burrowing trolls,
And the half-domes out came.

Beware the cyberstalk, my son!
The words that bite, the phrases that catch!
Beware the humdrum crap, and shun
The hackneyed spurious prattle.

He took his trekking poles in hand:
Long the Moosilauke he climbed -
So sheltered he, out of wind, alee,
A sonorous slumber mimed.

And as in deepened dreams he lay,
The Moosilauke with pate of sedge,
Came blowing o'er the scrubby ledge,
And brought him to the edge!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The carpal tunnel went back and forth,
As hike he did, traversing, ne'er reversing,
And climb and tame the burbling beast.

"Hast through traversed the Moosilauke?"
Come have a brew, my fearless thru!"
So bravely help thee in mind and heart:
'Tis only walking after all.

And the cheesecakes out came. :D

I'm not feeling especially creative tonight, but I'll share a short excerpt from a long poem that has always reminded me of my own childhood in rural NC and the simple joy in discovering the natural world.

THERE WAS A CHILD WENT FORTH
Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

"There was a child went forth every day;

And the first object he look’d upon (http://www.bartleby.com/142/1010.html#103.2), that object he became;

And that object became part of him for the day, or a certain part of the day, or for many years, or stretching cycles of years.

The early lilacs became part of this child,

And grass, and white and red morning-glories, and white and red clover, and the song of the phoebe-bird,
5

And the Third-month (http://www.bartleby.com/142/1010.html#103.6) lambs, and the sow’s pink-faint litter, and the mare’s foal, and the cow’s calf,

And the noisy brood of the barn-yard, or by the mire of the pond-side,

And the fish suspending themselves so curiously below there—and the beautiful curious liquid,

And the water-plants with their graceful flat heads—all became part of him.

The field-sprouts of Fourth-month (http://www.bartleby.com/142/1010.html#103.10) and Fifth-month became part of him;
10

Winter-grain sprouts, and those of the light-yellow corn, and the esculent roots of the garden,

And the apple-trees cover’d with blossoms, and the fruit afterward, and wood-berries, and the commonest weeds by the road..."

The poem continues at length, but these particular lines have always resonated with me, and they returned to me again when I discovered the simple beauty of hiking - and seeing. I thought of this poem so many times as I section hiked through southwestern VA during one memorable spring and summer. :)

Driver8, I hope you don't mind.....

Aw thank you so much, Teacher! That's very kind of you. :)

In fact I had a typo in the original post. It's supposed to read as follows:

Twas brillig and the slithy pohos,
Did gyre and amble on the trail,
All mimsy were the burrowing trolls,
And the half-domes out came.

Beware the cyberstalk, my son!
The words that bite, the phrases that catch!

And the cheesecakes out came. :D

(Hat tip to Mr. Lewis Carroll)

You want to know a funny thing? The poem was written in anticipation of Coach's and my trek across Moosilauke, which we did this past weekend, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th. Some of what I wrote ended up being a bit prophetic:

A sonorous slumber mimed.

Well, let's say I didn't sleep too well. Did get a few hours in. Usually a problem I've had on trail, so maybe not so prophetic. :)

And as in deepened dreams he lay,
The Moosilauke with pate of sedge,
Came blowing o'er the scrubby ledge,
And brought him to the edge!

Ok, I standing, certainly daydreaming, up above tree-line when I looked northwest into Benton Ravine from the top of its headwall. Got hit with a couple 50 mph blast gusts right then. Pushed me back from the edge, but still pretty intense. The forces at work atop those big mountains are powerful.

As for taming the burbling beast, that's just brave talk. Those mountains will never be tamed, not that I can see, nor should they be.

Yeah, It's Hot

Huff, puff, sigh, groan,
Will this infernal heat e'er pass on?
Trudge, tramp, stamp, heave,
Shall it ever take it's leave?

Walking in the woods is fun,
The moreso walking with a chum, or more than one,
But it becomes a bit of hazy muddle:
When you're melting apace into a puddle,
The mind it befuddles.

Methinks a day at the beach is in order,
On the day more like the furnaces of Mordar,
A nice cold drink in one hand,
The other ensuring the face is fanned,
Hazy blanket be banned!

One of my favorite hiking tunes- Where I Go, Natalie Merchant
Climbing under A barbed wire fence
By the railroad ties

Climbing over
The old stone wall
I am bound for the riverside

Well I go to the river
To soothe my mind
Ponder over
The crazy days of my life
Just sit and watch the river flow

Find a place
On the riverbank
Where the green rushes grow
See the wind
In the willow tree
In the branches hanging low

Well I go to the river
To soothe my mind
To ponder over
The crazy days of my life
Watch the river flow
Ease my mind and my soul
Where I go

Well I will go to the river
From time to time
Wander over
These crazy days in my mind
Watch the river flow
Where the willow branches grow
By the cool rolling waters
Moving gracefully and slow

Child it's lovely
Let the river take it all away
The mad pace, the hurry
The troubles, the worries
Just the river take them all away
Flow away

Oh I used to poop, like a healthy young man, yes nice strong logs, sturdy as spam.
Like a master plumber, I laid some pipe. My sphincter closed tighter than an angler on a pike.
So I went to the doc, to see what he'd say, so I could leave the toilet, sometime today.
He told me straight, my butt had the flu, flinging poo like the monkey's at the zoo.

Anal leakage, drippin down my knee,
Anal leakage, my pooper failed me,
Anal leakage, my ass don't work,
Anal leakage, it ain't funny Jerk!

Borrowed from Bob Seeger but with changes I made that I sing when I'm hiking.

Hikin' Man

Up with the sun, gone with the wind
They always said I would be pushing up a daisy
Leavin' my home, leavin' my friends
Hikinin' when things get too crazy
Out to the trail, out 'neath the stars
Feelin' the breeze, huggin' the trees

Trails have come, trails have gone
Everyone tryin' to cage me
Oh, some were so sweet, I barely wanted to leave
Others they only spared me
Sometimes at night, I see their faces
I feel the traces they've left on my soul
Those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul
Those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul

Hikinin' man, love to hike when I can
Turn in my hand 'cause I'm goin' on
Oh, hikinin' man, love to hike when I can
But sooner or later I'm goin' on, yea
Hikinin man

[break]

Sometimes at night, I see their faces
I feel the traces they've left on my soul
But those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul
I tell you those are the memories that make me a wealthy soul
Hikin' man, yea

Take Us Back - Alela Diane

The tops of crags and cliffs, the air is thin
So we'll find a mountain path on down the hill
Meet me where the snow mount flows
It is there, my dear, where we will begin again
Skipping stones, braiding hair
Last year's antlers mark the trail

Take us back, oh, take us back
Oh, take us, take us back

I've a friend who lives out by the rivers mouth
He knows the fiddles cry is an old sound
A lonesome creeks and moans of empty houses
Are songs of like fallen rain
Windblown buildings, muddy ground
The strength of water can sink a man

Take us back, oh, take us back
Oh, take us, take us back

When the higher hills have turned blue
And the waves are lapping where the children grew
All that we have know will be an echo
Of days when love was true
Muted voices just beyond
The silent surface of what has gone

Snacktime learned the play this song on the ukelele, with the intent of singing it at the campfire (he has a very sweet falsetto). We still haven't camped or stayed in a shelter when it wasn't raining, so he hasn't had a chance to perform it yet. Maybe this fall, Rocketsocks!

They all ran after my food bag,
I wish I could cut off their tails with a swiss army knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three shelter mice?

Drybones
07-15-2013, 16:30
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of swollen sores,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my tent door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my tent door-
Only this, and nothing more."

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow;- vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books of survival- survival for a day one more-

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each leaf
Thrilled me- filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my tent door-
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my tent door;-
This it is, and nothing more."

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Sir," said I, "or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my tent door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you"- here I opened wide the door;-
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was a roar
Tis my immagination said I
Merely this, and nothing more.

Back into the tent turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
"Surely," said I, "surely that is something at my tent door
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore-
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore;-
'Tis the wind and nothing more!"

Open here I flung the rain fly, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Bear of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance (javascript:xtip(376)) made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien (javascript:xtip(342)) of lord or lady, ripped apart my tent door-
Perched upon my being, lying in the tent door-
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony beast beguiling (javascript:xtip(69)) my sad fancy into howling,
By the grave and stern decorum (javascript:xtip(145)) of the countenance it wore.
"Though thy countenance shows anger, surely thou art no danger,
Ghastly grim and ancient Bear wandering from the Nightly shore-
Tell me what it is you’re looking for!"
Quoth the Bear, "Supper time!"

Walking Man - James Taylor

Moving in silent desperation
Keeping an eye on the holy land
A hypothetical destination
Say, who is this waliking man?

Well, the leaves have come to turning
And the goose has gone to fly
And bridges are for buning
So don't you let that yearning
Pass you by
Walking man, walking man walks
Well, any other man stops and talks
But the walking man walks

Well the frost is on the pumpkin
And the hay is in the barn
An pappy's come to rambling on
Stumbling around drunk
Down on the farm

And the walking man walks
Doesn't know nothing at all
Any other man stops and talks
But the walking man walks on by
Walk on by

Most everybody's got seed to sow
It ain't always easy for a weed to grow, oh no
So he don't hoe the row for no one
Oh for sure he's always missing
And something is never quite right
Ah, but who would want to listen to you
Kissing his existence good night

Walking man walk on by my door
Well, any other man stops and talks
But not the walking man
He's the walking man
Born to walk
Walk on walking man
Well now, would he have wings to fly
Would he be free
Golden wings against the sky
Walking man, walk on by
So long, walking man, so long

Stairway to Gilligan's Isle.

They Gilligan's Isle lyrics fit better to the melody of The House of the Rising Sun (same meter - 8686). Amazing Grace works too.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.
A tale that's very lame
That started on a Georgia mount
And headed up to Maine

The mate was mighty Hiker Mom
The skipper a Train Wreck
Five passengers hiking north on
A two thousand mile trek

The company got stuck at an
all you can eat buffet.
They'll have to get to Katahdin

Fought back I did, flailing and raving,

Scratching and kick, straight misbehaving,

When quoth the bear, "Get in me belly ...

On second thought, you're awful smelly!

Nay, methinks I'll move along,

'Tis blueberry season, and their flavor's strong.

I'd much rather have something pleasant like that

Than a stinky, wretched hiker populating my scat."

With that the great ursus lumbered off,

With a rumble, a roar and disgusted scoff.

But slumber myself did not revisit,

Liberally applied everywhere it could go, for there are no bears in Mexico. With hot sauce applied to my burrito, I began to feel appetizingly incognito. With liberally applied a new disguise, I lay back soundly to rest mine eyes.

The itsy bitsy spider went creeping up my tent...
out came the DEET but the canister was spent
down came the boot and turned the bug to goo
now that icky sticky spider is mucking up my shoe.

LOVE IT!!

I needed a a three syllable name that fit the iambic tetrameter and another that rhymes with "trek". You were the obvious choices.

Yay for us!! ... You got skilz!!

There was a hiker from Pawtucket,
Who's trail was too wet so he'd muck it,
He once tumbled down,
A steep hill with a frown,
But he smiled when his landing, he stuck it!

Love the signature.....hmmm....4/4 time makes me think of cadence.....

I know that humming a tune to keep pace is a common thing among hikers, and I've read a post recently about people's choices of song used to keep them going.

What about some original creations? I'm thinking ala military cadence

Drybones.....no pressure here....you're welcome to just read and enjoy and hopefully chuckle!

Here's a start.....

I've been told this many times...
hikers reek of dirt and grime...

Tell me truly what you think...
Is it true that hikers stink?

Smelly 1...2...
Stinky 3...4...
Bring it on down 1...2...3...4...
...1...2...P U

Teach- The Ol' Man is an influential fella on my life, you could call him an uncle. His stories come though the filter of my writing. Another good friend is Coyote Thunder Owl. At the heart of my hiking are his words, they may violate some of the spiritual/religious rules here, but when I first hiked the trail and told him of trail magic he taught me what Mitakuye Oyasin means. Shared though the filter of my writing no doubt, but still true words. One of my all-time favorites....while not AT or hiking, the epitome of backcountry adventure....sort of.

The Cremation of Sam McGee
By Robert W. Service 1874–1958

There are strange things done in the midnight sun

By the men who moil for gold;

The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows.

Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows.

He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he'd often say in his homely way that "he'd sooner live in hell."

On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail.

Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail.

If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see;
It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee.

And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow,

And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'erhead were dancing heel and toe,

He turned to me, and "Cap," says he, "I'll cash in this trip, I guess;
And if I do, I'm asking that you won't refuse my last request."

Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no; then he says with a sort of moan:

"It's the cursèd cold, and it's got right hold till I'm chilled clean through to the bone.

Yet 'tain't being dead—it's my awful dread of the icy grave that pains;
So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you'll cremate my last remains."

A pal's last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail;

And we started on at the streak of dawn; but God! he looked ghastly pale.

He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day of his home in Tennessee;
And before nightfall a corpse was all that was left of Sam McGee.

There wasn't a breath in that land of death, and I hurried, horror-driven,

With a corpse half hid that I couldn't get rid, because of a promise given;

It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say: "You may tax your brawn and brains,
But you promised true, and it's up to you to cremate those last remains."

Now a promise made is a debt unpaid, and the trail has its own stern code.

In the days to come, though my lips were dumb, in my heart how I cursed that load.

In the long, long night, by the lone firelight, while the huskies, round in a ring,
Howled out their woes to the homeless snows— O God! how I loathed the thing.

And every day that quiet clay seemed to heavy and heavier grow;

And on I went, though the dogs were spent and the grub was getting low;

The trail was bad, and I felt half mad, but I swore I would not give in;
And I'd often sing to the hateful thing, and it hearkened with a grin.

Till I came to the marge of Lake Lebarge, and a derelict there lay;

It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice it was called the "Alice May."

And I looked at it, and I thought a bit, and I looked at my frozen chum;
Then "Here," said I, with a sudden cry, "is my cre-ma-tor-eum."

Some planks I tore from the cabin floor, and I lit the boiler fire;

Some coal I found that was lying around, and I heaped the fuel higher;

The flames just soared, and the furnace roared—such a blaze you seldom see;
And I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal, and I stuffed in Sam McGee.

Then I made a hike, for I didn't like to hear him sizzle so;

And the heavens scowled, and the huskies howled, and the wind began to blow.

It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled down my cheeks, and I don't know why;
And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak went streaking down the sky.

I do not know how long in the snow I wrestled with grisly fear;

But the stars came out and they danced about ere again I ventured near;

I was sick with dread, but I bravely said: "I'll just take a peep inside.
I guess he's cooked, and it's time I looked"; ... then the door I opened wide.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar;

And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: "Please close that door.

It's fine in here, but I greatly fear you'll let in the cold and storm—
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm."

There are strange things done in the midnight sun

By the men who moil for gold;

The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

I was reading the thread by Aficion about whether or not a town-free thru-hike had ever been accomplished. This poem has NOTHING to do with it, but the idea of "it cannot be done" reminded me of a poem I wrote years ago about a traffic problem here at home.

Anyway, I was thinking it would be fun to write some stuff about impossiblilites of the AT.....here's my old, unrelated work to give an idea....

Persistance

"IT CANNOT BE DONE !!" the challenge begun,
"a left turn is pure suicide
coming off Broadway onto the Parkway
to merge with the traffic at 5."

Still, I buckled right in with an insolent grin;
if an opening came I'd pursue it.
But the cars just whizzed by as my gas tank went dry
and I found that I just couldn't do it.

A poster self-named Fiddleburn
Came here, to this website to learn.
The die had been cast
The years hurried past
So soon it is Aficion's turn.

My shot at a thru hike is sweet
Like lavender under one's feet.
May just get one shot
All your help means a lot.
Many thanks WB, I repeat.

In life people come and they go.
Each one has a story fo sho.
To everyone here
I lift up my beer
And say cheers, you are great folks to know.

The knowledge, the humor, the jibes
Shared gladly amongst all our tribes
Makes me thankful as hell
For the stories you tell,
More especially the very good vibes.

So ending my shared reverie,
Let me say I'm as glad as can be
That this life led me here
With these thoughts, friends, and beer
And all you have given to me.

Thanks Teach. BTW The Cremation of Sam Mcgee is one of my favorites too. On a Pack Trip into the Pasayten Wilderness the lead rustler recited it for our group around the campfire. Having always been a Robert Service fan I decided then and there to commit it to memory. Two years later I treated my brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, Dad, and my wife, then pregnant with our first child, to a 5 day float trip down the Salmon River in Idaho. They had to do two things: 1- get there. & 2- recite a poem around the campfire one night for the group. I chose the Cremation of Sam as my poem and went last on the last night. It took me that long to learn it. I got through it fine but can only come with bits and pieces of it now. Our firstborn, my daughter who made the trip in utero turned 18 day before yesterday. Thanks for the memories! (and the thread):).
