If you're not hiking far, bringing a set of portable speakers for your smartphone for when you set up camp is no big deal, but if you're getting far away, you want to keep your pack light. The Eco-Made iPhone amplifier (http://www.treehugger.com/gadgets/eco-amp-david-legrand-eco-made.html) is a flat-pack folded cardboard amplifier that stows neatly in your pocket or backpack and then can be popped up to pump up the sound of your music in your tent. It won't be enough for a party, but for some tunes around the campfire, it's an easy and lightweight solution.

That's actually a really good idea, wish I had thought of it :)
For years I've used a nalgine bottle or similer over a small speaker to enhance the sound and bring out the bass. But it doesn't work that well with smart phone type speakers.

I always hike with claves in my back pocket in case of a campfire jam session. All I have to do is whip them out.

I'm by phones the way I am about guns, it's a good idea for you to have one but I dont want to se it.
So.......in a shelter one night I used a trick that I learned about here on WB
Put my ear buds in my 6 oz titanium cup...............worked great.
Mice were dancing, snakes were happy............overall, a great ending to a day of hiking on the AT

Just a question: if you have to amplify your music to hear it, could it possibly mean you've had it turned up too far before and have lost some hearing?
Or do you really need to hear it from 40 feet away?
Besides, I REALLY don't want to hear your music when I'm trying to sleep. Yet another reason to be anti-social at night and sleep away from the shelters.

A little background music around dinner time is rarely objectionable. It can also be enjoyable if your hanging around the shelter most of the day instead of hiking in the rain. It does help if the sound quality is reasonably decent. Some portable speakers sound okay, some sound like crap.

One man's art is another man's garbage. Headphones are a good idea. This seems like a quick way to have someone put rocks in your shoes or worse. I fully intend to bring my cell phone and other electronics, but that's for my comfort. For everyone else's comfort, I would keep it as quiet and discreet as possible. I would put this up there with bringing a yappy dog to a shelter that you let run around and beg off lead - sure some people might think it's cute. A lot more will think it's asinine and get pissed. And that comes from someone who's planning on bringing their dog.
I haven't seen music - or even the idea of music - make people so cranky since that whole Miley Cyrus disaster.
