i figured this is the type of thread that would be of interest to kayak karl.
seriously, i was thinking that over the years, my shoe weight has declined as my tent weight has declined.my shoes weigh 24.4 ounces, and my new tent weighs 30oz.
what about you =your shoes or your tent-which is heavier?

Considering the weight when they were new, my tent is heavier.

Tent - TarpTent Contrail - 24.5 oz
Shoes - Soloman Sense Ultra - 20 oz

The other two pair of shoes I've been wearing on the trail were even less weight.

FiveFingers Spyridon LS - 14 oz
New Balance Minimus Trail - 12.5 oz

Seriously, people, you need to find something to do with yourselves.

By the way: A pair of size of 11 wide non-GTX regular-cut Moab Ventilators weighs 39.4 ounces. However, you can reduce the weight by cutting off the tang on the top of the heels (19.4 grams), replacing the laces with 2.2 mm Dyneema fiber cord (12.2 grams), and pulling off the little yellow Vibram label on the bottom of the shoes (3.3 grams). For ultralighters you can cut the remaining weight in half by wearing only one shoe.

Just Bill
07-22-2013, 22:54
Merrell quotes them at a pound and a half each- 3 pounds even for the pair- probably more for your size 11's there fella. Looks like your shoes are 8 ounces more than your tent, unless of course you forgot to count your stakes and lines- making them eerily similar in weight....intriguing.

Anyone know how much a pair of size 11 Moab ventilators weigh?

My size 9 low cut Ventilators weigh 1 lb. 14 oz. The high tops weigh 2 pounds. Extrapolate.

OK. This is bordering on the dumbest thing that I have ever done. One has to set the bar somewhere.

The North Face Bullfrog: not weighed as yet. Guesstimating 6 lbs. and change.
A tie:
Pivetta 5, size 9: 4 lbs.
Garuda Atman: 4 lbs.

Asolo 520 GTX: 3 lbs. 12 oz.

Another tie:
Ancient REI Summerlite 32° down bag (scheduled for replacement): 3 lbs. 3 oz.
Western Mountaineering Antelope Dry Loft 0° down bag: 3 lbs. 3 oz.

Antique Thermarest Ultrlight 1" sleeping pad (also scheduled for replacement): 1 lb. 12 oz.

MSR Heptawing tarp, complete: 1 lb. 3 oz.

Kitchen, complete less fuel: 1 lb. 2 oz.

Rivendell Mountain Works Jensen frameless backpack
or
Dana Design Arc Flex Terraplane backpack
To carry all of the above: Weightless & Priceless.
I have actually weighed both packs. I find nothing on the market today, from wispy little sacks to one of Dan McHale's custom creations, to temp me to replace either backpack.

That didn't turn out so dumb after all.

YMMV.

The tent is heavier than the boots, I'll do something about that the next time I have the money to do something about that. (I have an REI half-dome, bought when almost all my hiking was with my kid. Looking at a Tarptent.) It's bearable, but it's certainly the most obvious place right now for me to trim gear weight.

The boots are heavier than what most hikers wear. I still wear old-school full-leather construction-worker boots, 6 inch tops, at least in cold weather or in the kind of rock that I usually encounter where I hike. I'm ok in trail runners for easier day trips, but I wind up making hamburger of my toes if I wear them for backpacks or bushwhacks. The one weight concession that I make is that the toes are titanium rather than steel. They fit my crampons and snowshoes well. My current pair aren't going to make it through another winter, and I'm kind of dreading breaking in new ones.

My tarp (It is HUGE @ 13.5' X 10') at 32 Oz, add the hammock @ about 20 Oz & My 25 Oz boots are feather weight.
And, if we are talking suspension & stakes (I can, rarely do, use 10 stakes to tie out the tarp!): Well, I'd rather not know to be honest.
Drat, I figured it out anyway: add 1 Oz per stake, & as my hammock takes 2, I sometimes carry 12*. Plus about 6 Oz for the hammock suspension & OMG!

*Usually only 6 unless really bad weather is expected.

It depends on what Moab Ventilator version you have, They are made in: low cut, mid cut, wides, Goretex GTX WP, non WP, and XCR versions and combinations of those features which change the wt of the version but as a baseline the low cut Moab Ventilators that are WP with a Gore Tex liner are quoted as being 24 ozs(1 lb 8 oz) for the pr and it's my guess, that quoted wt is for mens size 9 or 10 reg(not wides). Those same versions in size 11 would probably be about 25-26 oz(1 lb 9-10 oz). Obviously, mid cuts weigh slightly more and a non WP version weighs slightly less. I've bought several prs of Moab Ventilator low cut non WP Ventilators and used them on a few different hikes. I've gotten into the habit of always doing my footwear research knowing shoe specs, including the wt for my size and version desired, before I even start considering purchasing them. It saves me a lot of time chasing down and trying on size 14 shoes that aren't appropriate and avoids the mismatching of my shoes with my feet, stride characteristics, intended usage, hiking conditions, etc. I knew no matter what version you have they don't weigh 3 + lbs a pr!

Doesn't REI quote them as 1 lb 14 ozs? - NOT 2 lbs 14 oz? The quote I gave came directly from Merrell but yet Merrell may be quoting the pr wt on a very small size shoe to make it appear they weigh less than what's typical for most males.

Heck NO. My Big 3 are never that low in wt as your shoe wt. I was comparing my Big 3 to some of those who hike in Herman Munster 3lb + shoes

Big 3

pack - ULA CDT 19 oz(has all the features I want too, this isn't a bare bones minimalist fall apart after one thru-hike pack, straps trimmed down a bit, the last time I weighed my CDT packs at 19 oz they were all grimy/dirty in used condition which possibly made the wt an ounce or two higher)

shelter - cuben tarp w/ stakes, guylines, polycro ground sheet, and dedicated tarp poles weighs 14 oz(*if I wanted I could fudge a bit and take the 2.4 oz tarp pole wt out and say I use trekking poles but since I don't normally use trekking poles I've included those additional 2.4 dedicated tarp pole ozs)

sleeping - WM Highlite Long 17 oz(I regularly take it down to 25*) + 5 oz CCF pad or NeoAir shortie(about 9 oz) = 22-26 ozs

19 + 14 + 22(26) = 55(61) ozs or 3 lbs 4 oz(3 lbs 8 oz)

And, not to get into a UL pissing contest I could shave off about another 10 ozs quite easily but this kit set up works for me so why change what works to save 10 oz when I know it's not going to make a shartload of difference in my hiking abilities.

Dogwood- you actually just quoted your big 4, you SUL superstar! For the rest of us (me included) a lesson learned or reinforced- Shoe weight is goddarn tricky. MOST shoes are listed by half pair (per shoe) Common sense should have dictated that Moab should be around 2pounds, but a quick look on my part prevailed. REI does kindly list them per pair. Merrell lists the Moabs and many of their shoes (at least in their current web lineup/design) as per pair with the exception of the lighter shoes marketed to runners (the rest of the shoe industry) per half pair. Oddly, they call out the light shoes as being weighed per shoe, but simply list a weight for the shoes weighed per pair. So bottom line, careful when quoting anything other than the scale. REI should be a good cross reference but as we all know the days of them putting their own data on there(as opposed to using the Manufacturers quotes) are long gone.

07-27-2013, 16:43
how do shoes and tents compare? you dont wear your tent on your feet and sleep in your shoe. and if you hike barefoot and carry the shoe then the shoe is likely not needed, or maybe you hike with a spare pair of shoes? seriously though i dont understand the comparison in weight. shoes are on the feet and not carried and balanced on hips so the weight is not a true carried factor. there are more variables too. season, terrain, trail etc all factor into gear weights. and if weight is a huge concern for the shoe then shoelaces should be replaced with braided floss. that should save significant weight especially when the laces are wet. opt for the mint floss to mask odor and repel mice.

Thanks, Dogwood. Your kit is a reasonable target to aim for.
I do need a new slepping bag and pad. I am currently thinking about a 20 degree bag at 29 ounces. I will expand the search to include a lighter bag. A NeoAir is also on my list. The new sleeping system will save considerable weight over my current antiques.
My trekking pole supported tarp is a few ounces heavier than yours. Not enough to justify the expense of a new tarp in my mind.
I'm not prepared to entertain a new pack yet. I'll wait to see how the new sleeping system and tarp work with my current 48 ounce pack. "If it ain't broke, don't fix itm"
One more time, as weighed by me on a digital scale;
1 pair, base model, no Gore-Tex, men's size 9, low cut, Merrell Ventilators = 1 lb. 14 ounces.
The size 9.5, mid-cut, over the ankle, plain Ventilators sitting next to the low cuts, on the same scale, weigh: 2 pounds.
YMMV.
Now, for a bIt of thread drift:
An all weather tent for 1, or preferrably 2, that weighs less than my 3 lb. 12 ounce boots. What say Ye?

Haha. I'll bite. Cause it's fun.

Shoes: ~10 ounces for the pair of Luna sandals
Tent: ~32 ounces plus 8 stakes (~35 ounces) Lightheart Duo Standard
or
Tarp: ~17 ounces plus 4 stakes (~19 ounces) OES MacCat Deluxe with accessories

"... shoes are on the feet and not carried and balanced on hips so the weight is not a true carried factor."

Good luck with that one with gram weenies. Have you ever heard of skin out weight? How about every oz on your feet is like an extra x ant of ounces on your back? How about how it relates to and may be similar in some respects to trekking pole use?

Ohh, I detect a gram weenie in the making with this next suggestion.

"...then shoelaces should be replaced with braided floss. that should save significant weight especially when the laces are wet. opt for the mint floss to mask odor and repel mice.:

I had already considered this and used to change my heavier wt stock laces on a few prs of hiking shoes to stronger thinner and lighter wt laces that didn't absorb the water. With even my longer heavier stock laces the wt difference(savings) isn't all that much less with the lighter wt laces that i found(less than 1 oz). Yeah I noted the wt differences between different laces. I'm in UL therapy. Never thought of soaking my laces in mint oil though. Besides, some trail runner manufacturers like Solomon already have water repelling UL Kevlar lacing systems which aren't much thicker than several; strands of twisted dental floss. I'm skeptical about how well twisted dental floss would work in practice for laces anyhow. I like that you're brainstorming about this stuff though.

You often hear 1 lb on your feet equal 5 lbs on your back. Here is a page that reviews some of the research:

However, it is also been shown that carrying weight on your head is easier than on your back. Such effects might be reasonable to consider when evaluating the weight vs function of gear choices.

Yes, carrying weight on ones head may be easier for some. not sure that i would be able to balance my pack on my head. would a strap system need to be installed to keep the pack centered on ones head? maybe dogwood can come up with an UL kevlar strap that is dual purposed to replace shoe laces, lanyards, and guylines.
