I probably don't have to worry about this but is easy to find ATM's in the trail towns along the AT? I don't care to carry a lot of cash with me on the trail. Thanks.

Maine has few ATMs and most were out of cash when I went through. Also many of the services in Maine are cash only, so be prepared.
Elsewhere on the trail ATMs can be found but it was easier to get cash back at the Dollar Store or Walmart when you resupply.

I try to avoid ATMs. Get cash back at grocery stores, walmart, post office and the like which don't charge a fee (so long as you buy something, which in a way is a fee, but you need the stuff anyway). In any event, probably 90% of expenses go directly on the card.

Can you get cash back with purchases made with credit card, or does this only work with a debit card?

Yes on some, but most credit cards have a cash-advance limit and some also charge a different (higher) interest rate on cash advances.

Not hard to find, but as mentioned, carry some cash. The amount is debatable, but I typically carry $100. I carry about $40 in my "wallet", but I stash some extra on my pack and person for an emergency. In the middle of the trail you'll pass all kinds of little stuff you may want, I'm guessing at your age you're not financially destitute and can afford some impulse eating, some broke folks carry no money so they don't spend it. Forget big bills- you don't want to whip out a hundo at a rural gas station. Most places will break a 20. That said- your biggest money problem tends to be getting all your sweat soaked grimy singles (or trying to break a $5) into the change machine at the Laundromat!

ATM's are not hard to find. I always tried to carry around $100 cash, just in case. Also, make it a point to have a few smaller bills, and even though I mostly refused to do it, $2 in quarters can be a life saver! You'll know what I mean when you find that sacred soda machine after hiking all day in 90+ heat with 90+ humidity...and then you realize it only takes ones and quarters!

It is slightly lighter to carry $2 in dimes than quarters. But only slightly.
