Hi all,

so one thing I always like to do to motivate myself along any journey is set out with a list of goals/achievements to accomplish or strive for along the way. I find it helps me stay motivated. So I am trying to create a list for my hike next year and am hoping others will help. So in no order here's what I'm looking at so far

see a bear
see a moose.
see a Luna moth.
hike a 30 mile day.
swim
see a sunrise.
see a sunset.
cook chicken Marsala on the trail. (I like to cook)
sleep a night under the stars.
complete the half gallon challenge.
stay at the RPH shelter.

Heck, you don't need to hike the entire AT. You can accomplish most of those goals by visiting Pine Grove Furnace SP.

See if you can eventually remember all the lyrics to "American Pie".

Seriously, it's funny the things that get into your head.

That's a nice list.

Replace hike a 30 mile day with Maryland Challenge.
Avoid all of the AMC huts.
Bear and moose should be easy to see. Add in a rattlesnake.
Night hike.
Hike nekkid

Here are a few to add to your list....

Order Pizza from Partnership Shelter (lunch or dinner)
Carry a non backpacking food item to a shelter and share (pizza, watermelon, pie, etc)
You and a friend (or two, or three, or four) polish off a Ben and Jerry's 'Vermonster' (@B&J stores)
Meet a hiker from a different state/country (new list each day and/or tally for the entire hike)
Take the train from Harpers Ferry to DC and tour the monuments/museums
Fly a kite from one or more of the balds / state high points / mountain peaks
Yogi your favorite beverage at least 2 times a week (not at same location or from same person) (Mine was root beer)

A few more from my perspective.
See and hear a loon on a lake in Maine
Pick & eat wild blueberries in Maine
See and photograph wildflowers of every color of the spectrum
Smell the balsam firs
Listen to a white-throated sparrow
Climb the fire tower atop Glastonbury Mountain in Vermont
Camp on top of HighTop Mountain in VA, watch the sunset
Sit on McAfee Knob

Pet a pony in the Grayson Highlands.
Take a zero day in the woods.
Take the train right from the trail to New York City (Harriman or Pawling/Appalachian Trail: your choice.)
Get lost, and found again.
Cross streams by rockhopping, fording, canoe, one-log bridge, fallen tree, ice, and zipline.
Catch a trout on improvised tackle.
Sing in a loud voice when there's nobody to hear.

With a failure rate of 75%-80% your first goal should be to finish. And if you do that, almost everything listed above is gonna happen anyway naturally.

i used to deliver pizza to the RPH shelter and meet all sorts of thru hikers, it was great. Every time they called my boss would yell at me because he knew I loved to chat with them. A 15 minute delivery took me 45
