After our eventful night at Peck's we were to go to Mt. Collins Shelter which is a 15 miler thru Newfound Gap. This was not a good choice for my wife. She was already suffering from blisters in a bad way. We hitched a ride from some trail maintainers up clingmans dome road to a spot where a simple wooden sign had A.T. on it. We were 7/10's of a mile from the shelter at that point which kept us from hiking the 4.5 miles from the Gap. This was a blessing and the trail angels were on our side that day.
The shelter seems to be getting alot of use due to it being close to the road. the privy was simply very unclean and needs some attention. it was small and extremely smelly. The water source is a fairly long hike down the approach trail. It was a good source and worth the walk. PVC piped, not a rusty pipe. Good source. The shelter was nice, nothing special. bunks were level and adequate for the 11 people that night. good flat yard in front that is overgrowing. it's a good stop between the Gap and Clingmans Dome. Also, if you get into a situation like we did you can get to the road and hitch a ride for help. Hope this helps.
