Planning on taking advantage of the 3 day weekend coming up and hike NC226 to Hwy19E over roan mtn. How is the weather generally speaking in late august early sept? Just trying to get a idea on sleeping bag and clothing. Thanks!!!!

It's supposed to be hot. But this year? I would bring my 40 degree bag and back it up with my down coat just in case I have to sleep in it. If you plan on sleeping atop Roan you should have a 20 degree bag.

If you're going that way you won't go over Roan Mt - this hike is much better than that! :)

Check the weather before you go.

What do you mean we won't go over roan? I was under the impression the trail went right over the top of it?

The series of balds referred to as the Roan Highlands carries the AT directly over the top. The portion of the Roan Highlands including the peak known as Roan High Knob, however, is just on the south side of NC 226/Carvers Gap. Thus, hiking nobo from there to US 19E carries you over Jane Bald, Hump Mtn, etc, but not over Roan High Knob.

Ok I see. So is it possible to go over roan and still end up back on the at?

So what's the best 30-35 mile trek in the roan area?

Iron Mountain gap to 19E is a good take your time three day hike and you get to go over Roan mountain. I am thinking of this hike over Labor day myself.

NC 226 is Iron Mtn Gap to 19 E. It Does go over Roan Mtn on the AT. Is cool and rainy this year and a 20-30 degree bag is needed. 226A goes to Carvers Gap.

The town of roan mountain has been having highs near the mid 70 and lows in the low 60s. This is several thousand feet below Roan High Knob so I'd estimate the temps IF you camp that far up will be high in low 60s and lows in the high 40 to low 50s. Because of the elevation, I'd plan for chilly night. I'm actually hiking south from 19E into Erwin over the Labor Day holiday so maybe I'll see ya'll on the trail. I'll be the guy in a kilt with a big black dog.

I am going to be out around this area over the next couple weeks. I have three weeks off of work and will be hiking as much as my dog can handle. He tore his ACL and had it repaired but still not the same.
