Would it be a dumb risky move to make my first tarp an asym ala simply light?

That seems like a price where I would say just buy that one--but if you make your own then just make it square because it will be easier to make and more versatile to use.

Ditto on making it square.

good starter piece...no worries ... pitch much lower than photo 1 to 2 foot off ground.

I have messed around with my Hennessey asym tart for ground use, and the square cut of definately more feasible

Ok in light rain. Heavy rain could be a problem. I would want more coverage.

I agree - but one corner can be pitched down as a foot box.

I ended up getting a WL Tadpole. Set it up with lash it and Dutchware flyz on the ridge, and self tensioning lines with micro linelocs on the guys. I've had it up for 3 weekends and I've been very happy with it do far. Great price and incredible craftsmanship.

My hennessy tarp is similar and I have had no problems with rain even the wind driven rain

My guess is that tarp would would keep you dry 95% of the time. I'd use 8" stakes to help in strong winds. I'm about to make a hammock and tarp and was thinking DRW on the hammock would be nice to repell rain blown under the tarp.

The Hennessy works. It just doesn't provide enough coverage imho. If I'm stuck in a rain storm it's nice to be able to get out of the hammock to cook etc. Hard to do that under a minimal coverage tarp. If you're just trying to keep dew, tree sap (happens a lot here in FL), etc then it's fine.
