After seeing people here discussing Spot, I got a Spot Gen3 GPS Messenger and took it on a hike last week. Hiked from Pinkham Notch to Gorham via the Wildcat-Carter-Moriah segment of the AT. Left the AT at Moriah and headed down into Gorham via the Carter-Moriah Trail. Unit was set for 1/2 hour tracking updates and all the messages I sent got through.

Here is summary of the track from the Spot Adventures website:

Interesting little device. It worked pretty well. The track can be exported in a variety of file formats, including GPX (just an XML text file). You can then import it into other mapping programs like Google Earth. It provides a permanent record of your trip for your records.

My wife and family were happy knowing I was OK. I had a little cheering section of friends keeping track of my real-time updates. Now if only I can get them to actually come on hikes with me...
