When we were young, we all heard about the fabled Boogie Monster.
The monster that comes out and devours young children when they sleep
in the safety of their beds at night. The Boogie Monster has
instilled fear in many a generation of youngins for as long as the
rumors have been around.
Made it so those of us that might not have ordinarily been bed
wetters, become ones because we were too afraid to put our feet down
on the floor to make that mad dash to the bathroom in the middle of
the night.
The Boogie Monster also was the cause of many a sleepless night, for
both children and parents alike because of the horrendous dreams that
he would be at the root of. For some of us he lurked under our
beds, for others, in the bedroom closet, and for others of us he
lurked just outside our bedroom windows, disguising himself as a tree
branch during the day and showing his true malevolent form at night,
as he scratched and tapped at windowpanes when we tried to get some
sleep.
But how many of us can actually say we have seen the Boogie Monster?
I can…
It happened one night when I was about four. We had taken a trip
from our home in Seattle to visit the grandparents in Southern
California. Grandma and Grandpa lived in an old and somewhat spooky
looking house; it was probably built at the turn of the twentieth
century. A two story wooden structure, with high ceilings, it looked
like something that could have come out of an Edgar Allen Poe tale.
Grandma and Grandpa had set me up with a room of my own to sleep in,
so as I would be able to get my proper sleep and would not be
disturbed by my baby sister when she woke up at night in the room Mom
and Dad were sharing. Grandma did not know that I was afraid to
sleep by myself in a house that I was not use to, and I was too
bashful to tell her of my fears.
That night, when the house was quiet, and everyone was tucked inside
their beds, I snuck out of my room on the other side of the house to
go and climb in bed with Mom and Dad in the middle of the night.
I wasn't use to the layout of the house, and was fumbling around
a
bit trying to make my way in the darkness passed the living room with
the loud grandfather clock. I guess I was not as quiet as I thought
because before I knew it, I discovered that I was not alone.
I heard the words, "Jeanie!' In a hushed but somewhat stern
tone.
Trying to make my eyes adjust to the darkness, I soon became aware of
a wide and tall figure that was within grabbing distance of me.
I darted to the side trying to avoid the beast, but tripped over an
ottoman and fell to the floor. At that moment, the beast turned on a
lamp. What I saw truly frightened me out of my wits…
Before me, in the shadowy room, stood the most freighting monster I
could have ever imagined. The beats was dressed in a pale pink,
quilted robe with little flowers plastered all of the material. The
fur on its head was encapsulated in a fine netting material and
little tuffs stuck out here and there. Its face was green and had a
gooey appearance to it, which looked as though it might be melting.
I screamed with all my might, hoping to stir everyone awake so I
would be saved for the Boogie Monster.
Then the beast said. "Jeanie, what's wrong?" In a very
sweet and
loving tone.
I stopped yelling, and looked at the beast hard.
I knew this voice; I just could not place where I'd seen it
before?
So I stared at it a moment longer, trying to make sense of this
completely bizarre situation.
Then my mother appeared in the hallway and I heard her asked.
"Mom,
what's going on?"
Confused, I looked up at the beast again.
As I looked closer, I began to see features that were familiar to me
now. I began to recognize those soft and friendly eyes. The round
and jolly face. And the well rounded figure. It then dawned on me,
this is no monster, this is grandma! I then reached up and took her
hand so I could stand up.
Grandma turned to my mother and said. "I don't know, I heard
a
strange noise in the living room and came out to check it out. You
know your father, he's as deaf as a doornail…I found Jeanie,
staggering around in the darkness. I think she must have been
sleepwalking, because she looked at me as though she didn't even
know
me."
