You watch your kids do stuff on the trail like you've taught them to without being told. :D

I thought the other thread was fairly successful, so lets get some positive stuff on here too :sun

Don't you just love it when . . . you break out of the long green tunnel into a stand of Balsam Fir trees. The air smells like Christmas and the sunbeams create rainbows in the mist of the rain that just cleared. Example: the Northbound mile and a half or so leading up to the cairns near White Rocks Mountain, Vermont. :sun

You're stumbling up the north side of Mt. Washington from the Perch Shelter (residence of the worst black flies in NH!) in the morning in the cold fog where you can barely see the next cairn. The wind is howling, you're getting wet with frozen fingers. You can barely discern the buildings on the summit as you look for the door. Of course, no one else is there in those conditions. A mere 5 minutes after reaching the summit.....the clouds part revealing a beautiful blue sky, sunshine, and 360 degrees of views across to the other ranges and down to the valleys, lasting the rest of the day, making the traipse to Lakes of the Clouds and then on to Mizpah a true joy.

Yes, this was my experience on my first ascent of Mt. Washington, SOBO section hike from Pinkham to Franconia.

You finally are ready to take that 1st step after all the planning, sending boxes, logistic problems, transportation to the trail, etc.
Now's the time to burn the schedule and just enjoy life for the next 5 months or so.

The western sky clears after a storm just in time for the setting sun to light the underside of the black clouds above and turn the wet forest and mountains around all golden and irridescent.

Winter sun warms your face after a day of sleet and numbing gray everything.

It snows just enough to frost everything but the trail stays a black line through the forest perfect for night hiking.

I thought Jack was miles away and didn't expect to see him, but there he was with Blister. I hadn't seen him in years.

Or the opposite...you start at the base where it's shorts and short-sleeves, and by the end of the day you're sleeping on 3' of snow...then back down to shorts again the next morning.

You work a long hard day on the trail and then get to play in the creek!

or

After a hard day at work you pack your backpack and head to the mountains without cell phones, computers, or worries.

... you throw your pack on, lock your car, and start off down the trail.

A shower, after 4+ days on the trail.

Your stove lights easy, water was close, that home dried meal you made has the other hikers DROOLING, he,he,he,he,he.

A cold cold night in a warm sleeping bag & your favorite shelter (tent, hammock, tarp, etc).

ANY view from the AT.

Getting up for no reason at 3:00 am, & seeing stars you can never see in town (I cried last time, shear joy).

Those shocked looks from the tourons as you walk out of the woods.

Food given you by those same shocked people :)
