Does anyone have any updates on the 15 year old girl who is N.B. with her Mom meeting her at road crossing? She should be getting very close to the end about now.

Here is her blog. Mama Chip posts daily, but delays the posts by a few days: http://www.ridethenation.org/1415-yro-chipmunks-solo-appalachian-trail-thru-hike-quest.html

I've met Buddy Backpacker, supposedly a thru, age 6 IIRC at Graymore Spiritual center in NY a few months ago, which would be quite a bit younger. I thought this post might be about him as I was wondering how he was doing.

And then there is Sunshine. At 13, the youngest Triple Crown Thru-Hiker.

All that being said, I am extremely proud to announce to you that at 5:30 pm on the 5th of September 2013, my 13 year old Daughter Sunshine (Reed Gjonnes) became the worlds youngest person to have ever thru-hiked the CDT and the youngest person to have earned the Triple Crown of hiking! She thru-hiked the PCT in 2011 at age 11, the AT in 2012 at age 12, and now the CDT in 2013 at age 13.

Congratulations!

"Chipmunk" was billed as the youngest solo thru-hiker, but that distinction can be debated as she has RV support. There have definately been younger thru-hikers, such as Sunshine. Sunshine's achivement is very impressive. Not only in doing the triple crown, but the speed at which they hike.

I believe Chipmunk is being referred to (assuming she completes the trail) as the youngest "solo" thru, because unlike the younger hikers mentioned in this thread, she doesn't have a parent actually walking along with her on the trail. Her mom is meeting her daily at road crossings, but with the exception of an occasional visitor, she is hiking by herself.

Humm, it looks like she is just getting into NH. I hate to say it, but I doubt she has enough time left to finish. It will be real close.

Good for her! When I was 15, the last thing I wanted to do was spend time with my mom :(
