This Is my gear list for a March 1st start on the AT. The only thing that will be different for the first couple of months that I'm bringing an Osprey Exos 46 instead of my ULA. Please tear it apart and I'd love to hear advice on gear that has worked well/hasn't worked for you. Thanks!

Looks pretty dang dialed in to me! IMO a cup isn't necessary since you have a pot, but shoot with a sub 10 lbs base weight, who cares! :)

Also I think you posted it 3 times on accident! :-?

PS did you modify your CDT? The weight on the website is 24 oz, you have 509g, about 18 oz.

ya i have done quite a bit of mods to it, pretty much down to a bare pack. I also found many of the bunjies to be useless.

I never used sun lotion when thru hiking the AT; I started March 1st, 2000. Make sure it doesn't have a fragrance that would attract bugs.

I use the Cascadia 7's too and love those shoes. The only things I would cut out would be the sun tan lotion and the flip flops. Just untighten the laces on your shoes and use them as "camp shoes" if you need them. Are the dynamo wind pants your only pants or are they an extra bottom?

Nice list.

+1 on Cascadias. Used them on my hike this year. Finished on my fourth pair.

I didn't see a ground sheet (tyvek or similar) for your Trailstar. Since it is a shaped tarp, you might want to add one. Also, when bug season hits, you might want to rig up some netting. From NY to VT, the bugs were horrible this year.

With a 3/1/14 start, I'd add some Microspikes. You will probably bust your buttocks multiple times if you don't. Risk injury as well (saw on thru-hiker separate his shoulder coming down Clingman's Dome on a trail that resembled a bobsled run). Probably send them back when you get to Hot Springs. Maybe later if you're a fast hiker. I had a 3/21/13 start & I decided not to take mine. Big mistake. I regretted it often.

I used Aquamira also. Worked great. Just 3 suggestions on its use: 1) be sure to tighten the caps; 2) be sure to tighten the caps; and, 3) be sure to tighten the caps. Consider taping the two bottles together for compactness. Keep the mixing cap from the first set when you resupply with your second set.

Use redundancy for water protection on your pack & its contents. It rained a lot on me. I used a trash compactor bag as a pack liner. Pack covers just slow down the rate that your pack gets wet. I used one. I also kept all my clothes & sleeping bag inside waterproof stuff sacks.

I'd add an extra pair of socks (two pair of hiking socks & one for sleeping). I used lined running shorts as underwear. I had an extra pair & a short sleeve shirt to put on when I got to camp where I was completely wet (or to wash/dry clothes in town).

Practice w/ your set up often. Enjoy your hike. I wish I had hiked the AT when I was your age. Old bones & muscles don't recover as fast as it does for the youngsters.

That looks like a very good list.

I would consider either carrying a second pad or getting one with a higher R-factor for the early, cold months.

You also won't need insect repellent early on. I strongly favor 20% Picaridin over DEET, but if you want to carry DEET, 100% is overkill. 30% should last for five hours or more, and once you get over 50% the higher concentrations don't seem to be any more effective.

You likely will not need microspikes in Georgia, but you may need them in the Smokies. It's not a bad plan to have them waiting for you there.

I would also consider some type of overmitt to keep your gloves from getting soaked.

I'm a 3 pair of socks, 3 pairs of boxer briefs, 3 shirts guy, but I like to be able to have dedicated sleeping clothes and to rotate the hiking ones.

You won't need micro spikes on the AT. Also no sunscreen, no compass, a bandana works better than a shamwow, they tend to collect grit. Probably won't need super glue either.

I rarely used sunscreen, never used my compass, occasionally used my small, cut-down towel, I used several small tubes of super glue, and wished like hell I had my micro-spikes. Packed snow becomes ice. I fell many times. Was fortunate that I didn't hurt myself. If I were to do it again (3/21 - my start - or earlier), I definitely take my Micro-spikes. Ship them back home after 200 - 300 miles (depending on how early I started).

Bring the superglue. It weighs nothing and is very useful. Forget the matches. Simply bring (2) small lighters. They weigh nothing and are soooo much more convenient. Always have 2, one is bound to break. They work when it rains and you get more uses out of them vs matches. Always have at least 3 pairs of socks. Your feet are the most important part of your body. Keep them dry to avoid trench foot and athletes foot (very common issues). Bring a tiny compass. It weighs nothing. Don't sacrifice safety over a micro ounce. You never know when you will need one. No one ever uses sun lotion because you will be in the Green Tunnel most of the day.

I would keep the sunscreen at least for the beginning of your hike. The trees don't leaf out in the higher elevations till around the end of April, so you will encounter sun. I didn't start out with any sunscreen on my thru and got a good burn on the back of my neck the first week. Picked up a small tube of sunscreen in Hiawassee and carried it to around Damascus.
