View Full Version : 1+ quart aluminum pot?

I'm not up for spending $40 to $50 for a titanium pot. So I looked on the web for an aluminum pot about 5 cups in size. The 3C Antigravity Gear (actually 3.4C) looks great except too small for me. And the GSR pot reviewed on Backpacking Gear Test is tall and narrow.

Anyone found an aluminum pot at about 5 cups? Any ideas?

Thanks.

The local REI in Tacoma has basic, very light (perhaps a bit heavier than my 1.3 L Ti pot) aluminum pots that look like they are about the size you are looking for. I don't remember the price, nor do I remember the brand, but the website should have them. You could also try buying a greasepot from Wal-mart.

I noted the part about not paying extra for titanium, personally I think it's worth it, but that is just my opinion. Check out www.rei.com (http://www.rei.com) , www.ems.com (http://www.ems.com) or www.campmor.com (http://www.campmor.com) any or all should have what you are looking for. Sierra Trading Post is another place you might to take a look at.

I found my 1 quart (will hold 5 cups to the max) aluminum pot/cup at National Wholesale Liquidators. I saw something similiar at K-Mart recently.

No frills, light weight (with an aluminum foil lid 3.9 oz) and the lip is rolled out unlike the Wallyworld greasepot.

The built in handle and the $4 bucks or so that it cost cannot be beat.

Everybody, thanks for the ideas.

I've looked at the REI website, and at the store here in Berkeley, and haven't seen one that size. The Walmart grease pot seems to be .9L. I'll go look at what else they have (holding my nose -- generally avoid that place). And I'll scrutinize those other website.

Check out wal-mart, K-mart, dollar general, Ocean state job lot, Odd lots/ Big lots ect. I bet you'll find a very cheap very light aluminum pot. If it has a handle that makes it heavy or bulky, cut it off and use the "pot holder" handles available at EMS ect.

Check anti gravity gear again...Tin Mann also has a larger pot, 2 qt I believe, with all the matching cozies also available.

You could probably find something suitable and cheap enough at Dollar General. If you don't want the handle, take it off and get a pot gripper.

LOL... What capoken said!

The problem is the handle. I have been using aluminum pots for many years. When i wear one out, i go to any cheap store like dollar general and buy a 1.3 litre cookpot. I take off the handle from my present pot and change it over to the new one. I once bought a titanium pot but only use the handle from it as i found that aluminum heats faster than titanium and is a lot cheaper.
or try a thrift store, but usually the good sizes are taken quickly
So if you can find a handle you like on any pot, i drill out the rivets and re-rivet it to the new pot. If you can live with a big handle sticking out in your pack (i can't) you don't have to worry about this problem. (or do what Capoken says)
but i agree with you. those titanium pots are not worth the bucks!

I just got back from a road trip to K-Mart and Walmart. They don't allow them in Berkeley here, so it was a couple of towns south. The only thing remotely close was the all-hallowed Wally World Grease Saver. As I had heard, it's a bit small and has a dumb reverse curled lip. No thanks.

Maybe next I'll do a tour of whatever Dollar stores I can find in this area. If that fails I might just buy the Open Country Backpacker kit and cut the thingies off the sides you're supposed to run a strap through.

Tin Mann's 3+ cup pot will work for most but here is a good link right to his lowest price 2 qt pot w/ cozy, handle, and stove for $35....

http://www.antigravitygear.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=3_32&products_id=135

the pot used to be available separately for about $ 16...you might call him and ask...George is a good guy who will work with you.

Thanks for the lead on Tin Man's gear. I've looked at his stuff on the web many times. It's tempting, 'cause it has just the right features for good prices. But his small pot is just too small for me to work with, and I have a 2 qt. Open Country alum. pot already. Just trying to find the size sweet spot.

Nice, but I could get a shorter pot out of this set and find or make a light lid for it...

I found a 1 qt. pot (non-stick, outside painted black) that looked about the right size in Dollar Tree here in California and bought it. It holds 4.5 cups. I'll cut the long handle off and use a pot grabber (like at Antigravity Gear). It didn't come with a lid (after all, it was only a buck), but, lo, the lid from my 2 qt. Open Country pot fits perfectly!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

So I sawed off the handle and it weighs 4.5 oz. With a lid 6.25 oz. Add a pot grabber and I'm up to 7.5 oz. Same as my 2 qt. Open Country. Oh well, it's more compact. If I really want to save a couple ounces I'll have to get Antigravity's littler 3C (+) pot. The hunt was fun though.

wally world grease pot needs two mods, if you're handy. use a pair of sidecutters to cut through the lip, then unroll it all the way around. then cut it off with a good pair of tin shears. (if you just cut off the rolled lip, that works too, but you end up with a shorter pot.) then take a very fine mill file and file it perfectly flat all the way around. second thing is that you can drill two holes in the sides, below the level of the lid, and run a bail through them. mine weighs 5 oz with the new handle. and i don't have to carry any pot holder.

you can also go to walmart and get one of their cheapo mirro brand pots and unscrew the handle. not sure what it weighs.

Good idea for a light handle. What did you use for a bale... coat hanger? And it's big enough for a dinner for one hungry hiker?

And it's big enough for a dinner for one hungry hiker? This is enough to make a big dinner for a (big) hungry hiker: http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=13651&memberId=12500226 The greasepot is larger than that.

Thanks for the tip.

That .85L is the same as Antigravity Gear's 3 Cup pot, according to an email I got from the Tin Man from AG. So I think I'll get one of his.

i thought baling wire or a coat hanger might corrode/rust eventually, so i used a piece of either #18 or #20 electical wire. should have left the plastic coating on, but i peeled it off. can always fix it...

yes, plenty big enough for one, and i can actually feed myself AND my 10 year old daughter out of it. comfortably holds a package of lipton noodles AND either a 3 or 5 oz portion of foil-packaged meat (3 if alone, 5 if she's with me).
