Where can I find some Sil Nylon or iquivelent rain pants. What I need is when it starts raining, take off my only pair of shorts I take and wear my compression shorts with a syl Nylon or cuban fiber pants over them.

Dont know who sells them but if you have a sewing machine you could buy some material and make a pair pretty easily, that's what I'm planning to do.

Consider a rain wrap. It keeps your shorts and upper legs dry, vents well, is very light. www.etowahgear.com (http://www.etowahgear.com)

Luke's products look interesting. Anyone used any of his products and can comment on quality and durability ?

Silnylon bleeds through at presure points making it pretty much useless for rain gear in my book.

One of these days I've got to get around to making a rain wrap out of Tyvek, which I think would work well.

SLO GOEN- Can you describe more of what you mean at pressure points ? I have a sil tarptent and it has survivedtorential rainstorms with not a drop, I have however seam sealed it thuroughly

LightHeart Gear Rain Wrap (http://www.lightheartgear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=45&zenid=38a8a24af5d2e070b4b90d494f7186dc) It is not made from sil - it's a silicone /pu coated fabric that cannot wet-out. It comes in multiple sizes to fit - not one size fits some.

Anywhere the nlyon presses up against something, like your knees. Or pretty much your whole leg for that matter. Ponchos are no better, they leak at the shoulders, arms and legs.

If the foot of your sleeping bag were to push up against the side of the tent while it is raining, you would find it will get wet. There needs to be a space between the silnlyon and anything else to keep the bleed through from happening.

The only thing which won't bleed through is polyurathane coated nylon.

The "Hydrostatic Head" is a rating of how much pressure it takes to force water through the fabric. Pressure against the fabric (such as your knee) can help the water to push through. Silnylon made in the USA has a HH of about 1200mm water pressure. Imported fabric can have a much higher HH rating. This is why some silnylon will "mist" - when it rains tiny droplets of water can migrate through the weave and splatter you on the other side. The higher the number the more waterproof.

I concur, nice gear.

I would think wet sil-nylon would get 'clingy' used how you describe, and I don't know where to get that.

But I have used a rain skirt (or rain kilt - for all you squeamish out there), and it works really well,to the point that I usually have dry shorts under (yes in a kilt there should be nothing worn, but sometimes conditions don't permit that). It does take some layering of levels of rain gear to achieve this level of dryness in a heavy rain, but it is possible.

Misting is a myth, what misting actually is condensation build up being hit on the other side by rain, and being "popped" off the fabric. Lol how would a droplet of water have enough force to push through the fabric before it desperses

Misting is reality, although it takes a heavy rain for it to happen. I do agree though with you, that condensation getting knocked off happens first.
Rain pants can have two goals-
1st being as rain pants, IE keeping you dry. UL silnylon does bleed as described, and will not keep you dry. Cuben will, but will be clammy. Like all rainwear, you will likely sweat yourself wet first when moving. So in that regard, a rain skirt performs much better. Cuben or PU coated fabrics work best, although I have used 1.1 oz Sil Nylon as a skirt for mild rains. Better than DWR, but it will fail eventually, especially along the tops of your thighs.
2nd use is for wind pants or warmth around camp- if you use a quilt with a drawstring footbox, you can wear your sleeping bag around camp. However, no quilt or skirt can substitute for wind pants. If you find you have a need for wind pants, I'd suggest an M50, Pertex, or other high quality DWR fabric so you don't sweat them out.
There is no magic bullet at temps above 40-50 depending on your sweat level. While it's an investment, a good high quality DWR wind pant, typically 4-6 oz, coupled with a Cuben Skirt at 2oz. is your best three season combo. Come winter, then a WPB fabric can work, as will Sil-Nylon or other non-breathable waterproofs. Choose one to buy first based on your budget, but eventually I think most folks end up with all three in their gear bin.

My understanding, which may be totally incorrect, is Sil-nylon is not a solid waterproof material but has actual gaps in it. Again I don't know if this is true, but this is how it has been explained to me.

The silicon bonds to and permeates and 'rubberizes' the nylon fabric, but does not seal across the threads as a continuous solid barrier. These gaps between the fabric is held together by pressure of the fabric's weave, closing the gap tightly against each other, forming a watertight seal. But the gaps still exist. On very heavy rain, with enough force and a hit in the right spot the right way a little bit of water (misting) can get through.

Misting can also be from dislodged condensation.

Well, after checking out the price$, I think I'll stick with the Hefty Cinch Sack "rain skirt" for all but winter season. Cheap, and easily replaced. :D

Misting is real.

Take 1200 mm silnylon for instance
thats only water tight to 1200 mm = 47" of water pressure = 1.7 psig.
Its not as waterproof as you think. Thats why you can get bleed thru from kneeling on it, etc.

Heavy rain, or windblown rain can exceed the resistance rating.
But more common is knocking the film of condensation off on the inside.

For cheap, reasonably light wind/ rain pants go to the thrift store and find a pair of nylon ski pants. The will be PU coated nylon with insulation. Take a razor blade and cut all the inner liner and insulation out. Presto, rain/wind pants that are waterproof and breathable, for $3.

Sil nylon is not breathable but I have a sil nylon rain skirt and it worked perfectly. No issue
