Well, I now have me a first rate sewing machine and I've ordered enough material to make a tarp and two hammocks, one double for winter and a single for warmer weather, so I will be going into a sewing frenzy when I get back from the trail in November. I should have been born a girl, I love to sew, last time I did tho was on a Singer foot pedal powered machine. I'll make rain gear and a tent after the hammock project.

Naw, no girly about it, it's just material, and a desire to build something useful. I too have a couple projects in mind, and need to re-learn how to use our sewing machine....I'm thinking some Tyvek overmitts to start.

Those skills are very easy to learn....check to see if a JoAnn Fabrics or any sewing machine dealer in your area offers lessons. Or call RocketSocks and have him teach you!

I could use some of those lessons. Some of my projects came out great and some are, well, functional :o

I was telling Shellie about these and she said we could make them long to go up on the forearm with elastic in them to keep them in place.

What machine did you end up with?

Oooh. Do tell! We always have to talk about "my pole is better than your pole" or "my new ultralight silnylon tarp is better than your cuben tent" or "my new ULA vaporizer is better than your Osprey Terminator." Let's geek out on sewing machines instead!!!!

I have a Brother cs6000i. Why? Well, I'm a geek so I just HAD to have a computer in my sewing machine :D :banana:banana:banana

Another Stitch B*%ch here....5 or 6 years ago, I didn't know how to sew with a machine. Now I have 7 machines total, including 3 industrial machines--a Tacsew walking foot, a Consew cylinder arm walking foot, and a Juki serger. I love turning out well made gear that is custom built for my needs.

What machine did you end up with?

My wife bought a New Day, Jenome model 108 at a yard sale for $5, owner said it had been used very little. The wife never used it, been setting in the basement for years. Never heard of it so I did some research, sold for $308 decards ago so it was a fairly expensive machine, does every stitch out there, even sews buttons on. It should be a lot faster than the old foot pedal Singer I used years ago but I'm considering replacing the drive belt on it and using it some just for the heck of ot.

Before I crank up and start sewing I'm going to do something I've never done before.........read the directions.

Lol, you big tough hiker guys, dueling over sewing machines...I love it! A gear junkie is a gear junkie, no matter what the gear.

Personally, I have 8 machines--one modern and the rest vintage. Don't ask how many packs and tents and sleeping bags we have gotten over the years...

Have fun!

The license plate on my car says "LRN-2-SEW" (too dark right now to get a picture of it). So I suppose you can guess, I have lots of sewing machines, 6 or 8 home machines, the rest (another 8 or 10 or more) are in the shop, but it's a business. The sad part is I rarely ever get a chance to sit down and sew on them myself anymore.
