All, My buddy and I will hike the section between Deep Gap, NC and Fontana (~ 80 mile) in the second week of October. Any issues with water, wild life, etc.

As long as the weather stays good (it has snowed a few times in the last 5 years), it should be a great hike. I did the same section back in June.
Any issues with this section due to the Gov't shutdown?

Shouldn't be, Standing Indian CG is still open. Not sure about the FS 71 road, might have to hike in on Kimsey Creek trail.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/nfsnc/alerts-notices/?aid=20323 Wow, good point! I never though about our gov't actually shutting the gates on all normally accessible forest service roads. That sure would mess up the ability to get to a ton of trailheads down in Ga/NC. :)
Does anyone know if FS 71 is open?? We leave on Saturday and plan to hike to Fontana from Deep Gap, NC.
Thanks

I don't know the status of FS 71, but if it is closed just drive to the nearby Standing Indian Campground and take the blue blazed Kimsey Creek Trail 3.5 miles to Deep Gap.
I called the shuttle service at the Hike Inn at Fontana. They said all FS roads are open.
