I was planning on leaving tomorrow to start a hike at Carvers Gap near Roan Mountain. Anyone know if there are any issues with the shutdown and accessing the trail at Carvers Gap?

The only thing closed on Roan are the gates leading up to Cloudland and the gardens. And the restrooms. Which they are closed pretty much around this time anyway.

Only trail on NPS lands have been greatly affected.

From the tehcc.org website.
Impact of Federal Government Shutdown on TEHCC’s AT Section (http://tehcc.org/2013/10/fed_gov_closure/)

The Appalachian Trail section maintained by the TN Eastman Hiking & Canoeing Club is OPEN. Per the official ATC statement: “U.S. Forest lands and state lands crossed by the Trail remain open, however, USFS buildings and facilities are closed.” Emergency response will be extremely limited during the shutdown and may be unavailable in certain areas. In addition: “…for the duration of the shutdown, the ATC will not be able to engage with volunteers in activities on the Trail, Trail facilities, or Trail lands.”
And please also see the post below that Forest Service has still temporarily closed the Oliver Hollow Area towards Wilbur Dam to public entry except for through hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

This past Saturday I hiked North out of Carver's Gap. I had no problems and I saw no indication of any shutdown. There were plenty of hikers in both directions.

How were the water sources from Carver's Gap to 19E? I'm thinking about doing that section for the first time this weekend.

How were the water sources from Carver's Gap to 19E? I'm thinking about doing that section for the first time this weekend.

When I went through that section last weekend a couple of small springs right after the Grassy Bald side trail were flowing as was the spring just before you get to Bradley Gap. I did not visit the sources at the Stan Murray or Overmountain shelters but I believe that the Overmountain sources are ok. Also, I talked with someone that got water at Doll Flats.

It should be a good weekend to be up there.

I will be hiking south from Hwy 19 to Devil's Fork Gap week after next. Really looking forward to this section.
