Coupla tings. Closure unrelated to trails on wooden sign and a bit dated.

The guy on the horse sign isn't wearing a cowboy hat.

HooKoo, you're going to have to enlighten us...not sure what you're aiming at. The sign isn't done well, for example, it says "trail closure ..... for improvements" or something like that, with the .... being several lines of distracting information inserted in the middle. From the photo, it appears that the sign may have been placed on the wrong post, but the top of the post isn't shown - maybe there's another sign at the top identifying it as the Chimney Tops Trail.

For those who don't know, the Chimney Tops Trail is a non-AT trail in the Smokies acccessed from 441 on the TN side. A great deal of erosion has occurred where the trail reaches a rocky outcropping. The rhododenron has been so trampled by hikers climbing up to the top that the soil has washed away and the rhodies have retreated several feet down the slope. I'm glad they are trying to make improvements, but I doubt the weekday closure will be sufficient. It needs to be closed for a year or two at least.

Well the obvious answer is it's a year old. The less obvious answer is the Miry Ridge trail is pretty far from Chimney Tops and it's not like its a natural connection or anything like that where you would hike Miry Ridge and end up on Chimney Tops. Very strange. :)

BINGO !!!

The MAIN thing is the location of the sign relative to the Chimney Tops Trail. While you can get to Chimney Tops from the Miry Ridge trail, it's about 15 miles away.

The "out of date" is only sort of secondary, as the trail has been closed in a similar fashion this year as Phase II of the trail rehabilitation has taken place.

That's why I posted under the GSMNP sub-forum... and while not a part of the AT, you can reach the Chimney Tops Trail from the AT via Road Prong Trail between Clingman's Dome and NewFound Gap.
