So, is there still bear activity problems at Roaring Fork Shelter?
Thinking about a section hike from Standing Bear Hostel to Hot Springs, and considering stopping at Roaring Fork Shelter.
Thanks for any insights, suggestions, and words of warning.

I just hiked this same section this past weekend and ran into a few bear hunters who all said they were not having any luck this year. They were convinced that the bears are elsewhere right now. Who knows??
BTW, I camped just north of Max Patch did not stay at any shelters and had no problems with bears or any other critters.

That area always seems to be a hot spot of bear activity. I def wouldn't let my guard down around there no matter what the reports are.
very little food at higher elevation, not many white oak acorns and such this year. bears are at lower elevations searching for food.

i spent the night there in late may. didnt see any bears but i did see ample signs of them having quite the presence in the area.
One thing about the shelter I just remembered, there is a very large tree down across the trail to the shelter. That is unless a crew has been through since.

Hiked Match Patch to Hot Springs 3rd week of June with overnights at Walnut Mountain and Dear Park shelters. Guy behind me saw a bear come out on trail near Dear Park.... but no bear sightings for me.

I went through this area in June. There was poop on trail in multiple places and a recently left note at a campsite describing an aggressive bear that could not be scared away by yelling, whistling, etc. I was a chicken and did Max Patch into Hot Sorings in one day to avoid sleeping with the bears.

i didnt see a note, but scat and footprints in the extreme maybe a 1/4 mile before the shelter going north.
there was probably 20 off us at at and around the shelter that night so i wasnt worried. i dont know if i would have stayed alone.
